RISD employee pleads guilty to sexual assault

A Roscoe Independent School District employee pled guilty to second degree sexual assault on Tuesday, July 17, 2012, during 32nd Judicial District Court proceedings with Judge Glen Harrison presiding.
Felix Abrigo, who has been a custodian and bus driver at RISD, was sentenced to 10 years of community supervision and will have to register as a sex offender for the alleged incident that occurred June 12, 2011. He will also have to pay a $5,000 fine, $743 in court costs and serve 240 hours of community service. School authorities were not available for comment as of press time.

Sweetwater school lunch prices increase

The SISD (Sweetwater Independent School District) Launch Pad Initiative was the main topic of discussion at the school district's Board of Trustees meeting held on Monday evening, July 16, 2012 at the Administration Building.
Presented by SISD's Educational Technology Director, Mike Marlett, the board learned about the highlights of the program--which will allow this year's eighth graders to use Apple iPads--while also going over the handbook that will be presented to both students and parents.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 56 calls for service, issued two citations and made two arrests on July 16, 2012.

The SPD received 20, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Assault — 600 block of Josephine.

Arrested by SPD:
• Carolyn McGinley, 31 — Warrants.
• Kari Southern, 34 — Public intoxication

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had nine calls for service, served no civil papers and made no arrests on July 16, 2012.

Calls for service:
• Stranded motorist — I-20 MM 251 west bound.
• Medical emergency — Bois D'Arc.

Miller, Heredia named as head coaches at SHS

A pair of familiar faces with longtime ties to the community are assuming head coaching jobs this year at Sweetwater High School.
Al Miller, who has been serving as the junior varsity girls basketball coach at SHS, will be taking over as head coach following the recent resignation of Candice Wyatt, who is going to Stratford.
Miller is entering his 17th year at SHS where he has not only been an assistant coach in basketball, softball, track and volleyball at the high school level but has also coached basketball, football, track and volleyball at the middle school level since being hired.

Montgomery is returning as coach

Giles Montgomery, a former all-state lineman at Sweetwater High School and a 2004 graduate of SHS, is returning to the sidelines this year as an assistant football coach.
Montgomery, who also played collegiately at Texas Christian University after his star-studded high school career here in the early 2000s, will coach the offensive line. He replaces Bobby Williams, who left to join Craig Slaughter’s coaching staff at Llano.

TSTC to host crisis intervention seminar

July 17, 2012

A crisis intervention seminar will be presented by the Texas State Technical College Chemical Dependency Counseling Program from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 18, 2012, at the TSTC Conference Center in Abilene, located at 650 E. highway 80. The seminar is free and open to the public.
From 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Lori Bunton of the Regional Crime Victims Center will speak about crisis of domestic violence, child abuse and sexual assault.
From 1:30-2:30 p.m., Katherine Lewis of Hendrick Hospice will speak about crisis of grief.

Babysitting Camp this Friday

A Babysitting Camp will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, July 20, 2012, at the Texas State Technical College activity center.
Those attending can get ideas for food, games and activities to do with the kids they are babysitting, which will be housed in a notebook that the participant gets to take home along with many other great ideas for babysitting. There will also be CPR Certification available and demonstration of first aid techniques.
Cost for the camp is $50 for students ages 13-18 years of age only.

Area 4-H’ers earn scholarships at state event

Lubbock — Parker Scott, Nolan County 4-H'er, was awarded a 2012 Texas 4-H Opportunity Scholarship sponsored by Richard Wallrath Education Foundation for $10,000.
The scholarship was one of 251 totaling over $2 million awarded by the Texas 4-H Youth Development Foundation during the 2012 Opportunity Awards Ceremony June 11 in United Spirit Arena on the campus of Texas Tech University.

Chamber, BCMRC member dies

July 17, 2012

Charles Henry Roberson, 85, a man very involved in many local organizations and activities, died on Friday, July 13, 2012.
He was a faithful member of Greater Zion Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, Treasurer and as a member of the financial committee. He was a member of the Sweetwater Country Club, a Red Coat Member (Ambassador) of the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce, Goodfellows, Big Country Medical Reserve Corps, United Way and the County-City Library Board.
He is shown far left at a ribbon cutting in 2011.

One jailed during arraignments

July 17, 2012

One person pled guilty during 32nd Judicial District Court proceedings on Monday, July 16, 2012.
Branden Thomas Almanza pled guilty to evading arrest, enhanced with one prior conviction, a state jail felony.
For his plea, Almanza received 12 months confinement in the State Jail Division of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. He will have to pay a fine of $500, $309 in court costs and $500 in attorney's fees. He will receive 198 days credit towards his sentence for time already served in jail.
