The SEED (Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development) Board of Directors met for their regular monthly meeting on Monday morning, June 18, 2012 at the Chamber of Commerce.
Kirstin Smith, the Asst. Marketing/Admin. Director, gave an update, recapping SEED's recent trip to the 2012 Windpower Conference that was held in Atlanta, Georgia. The show went well, with around 12,000 in attendance. While attendance was cited as lower than usual, the quality of the show was one of the best in recent years.
Nolan County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director Dennis Cumbie, announced that county committee election nominations began June 15, 2012. Farmers, ranchers and landowners are encouraged to nominate farmer and rancher candidates to serve on their local FSA county committee by the August 1, 2012 deadline.
Elected county committee members serve a three-year term and are responsible for making decisions on FSA disaster, conservation, commodity, and price support programs, as well as other important federal farm program issues.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 149 calls for service, issued eight citations and made nine arrests from June 15-17, 2012.
The SPD received 62, 911 calls.

James Shute, age 76, of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away on Monday, June 18, 2012 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 22, 2012 at Sweetwater Cemetery with Rev. Frankie Santiago officiating. Burial will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Sweetwaterâ€™s Major League (ages 11-12) Dâ€™backs finished as the runnerup team after advancing to the championship game of their District 5 Little League tournament. Sweetwater beat the Snyder Braves 9-7 and Jim Ned 5-4, then lost to Dixieâ€™s Mets 5-4.
But, they advanced as the wild card team and beat Wylieâ€™s Rangers 11-8 to advance to the District 5 championship game for a rematch with Dixieâ€™s Mets. However, they lost 4-3 to finish as the District 5 runnerup.
A total of 45 kids signed up for the kids fishing tournament on Saturday, June 16, 2012, at Lake Sweetwater, sponsored by Pappy's Bait and Grill Shop and the Sweetwater Kiwanis Club. The event was held at the Lake Sweetwater public boat ramp, with the competition running from 8-10:30 a.m. Prizes were awarded for the Biggest Fish, Smallest Fish and Outstanding Angler to the following age groups: 3-5 year olds, 6-8 year olds, 9-12 year olds and 13-16 year olds. Judges for the competition were Mark Morgan and Jason Bond.
This year, as part of the TSTC (Texas State Technical College) Women's Leadership Institute's (WLI) mission to support the TSTC Values, each TSTC location â€” Waco, Harlingen, Marshall and West Texas (Abilene, Brownwood, Breckenridge, Sweetwater â€” will do a community project on Saturday, June 23, 2012.
The Sweetwater group spoke with Russell Jones, City of Sweetwater Director of Public Works, about painting the picnic tables at Newman Park and he was thrilled with the idea. He has also asked that the pillars of the pavilion be painted as well.
Graveside services for Luene Setliff, 94, of Sweetwater, will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 20, 2012, at Sweetwater Cemetery with Rev. Brian Brownlow officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at McCoy Funeral Home.
Setliff died Monday, June 18, 2012, in Sweetwater. She was born May 9, 1918 in Anniston, Alabama. She married Chester Ray Setliff on July 15, 1939, in Altus, Oklahoma. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, who lover her family dearly.
Zonelle Gregory, age 99, of Colorado City, Texas, (former longtime resident of Sweetwater, Texas), passed away on Sunday, June 17, 2012 at Mitchell County Hospital in Colorado City, Texas.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 20, 2012 at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel with Royce Clay officiating. Burial will follow at Garden of Memories. Arrangements under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Graveside services for Thurman Randall "T.R." Hayes, 85, of Sweetwater, will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 19, 2012, at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Sweetwater, with Rev. Keith Clower and Rev. James Baker officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Hayes died Sunday, June 17, 2012, at his residence.
