Glenn Stifflemire, a Texas native with more than 40 years newspaper experience, has been named publisher of the Big Spring Herald and Sweetwater Reporter.
Stifflemire's appointment was announced by Terri Leifeste, a vice president with Horizon Publications, which owns both newspapers.
âWe're very excited to have Glenn join our company,â Leifeste said. âWe believe his many years of experience in the newspaper industry will prove to be a benefit for the Herald and the Reporter and their readers.â
Thousands headed to the polls to cast their ballot on Tuesday, November 6, 2012, including Nolan County. With all nine precincts reporting, voter turnout came up to only 54%. Out of 8,493 registered voters, only 4,607 ballots were cast.
Straight party tickets were popular among Republican voters, with a total of 1,367 ballots. Democrats brought in 716 straight-ticket votes, while Libertarian and Green party ballots were at 33 and 10, respectively.
Students at East Ridge Elementary took part in a mock presidential election on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 6, which was set up by the teachers at the school.
Students cast their vote and expressed their opinions as they "headed to the polls".

Several women from Trinity Baptist Church recently delivered filled purses to benefit two local organizations helping women. They filled 54 purses with toiletries and other items to be given to women who seek shelter against domestic abuse.
According to Krista Hendrix â one of the organizers â 30 of the purses went to the local women's shelter and 24 purses went to the Noah Project in Abilene.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 38 calls for service, issued three citations and made one arrest on Nov. 5, 2012.
The SPD received 33, 911 calls.

âą Valarie Elaine Johnson, 41, of Roscoe â Public intoxication, possession of marijuana and possession of controlled substance (meth).
Florencio Gauna, 71, of Sweetwater, passed away Nov. 5, 2012, at Hendrick Medical Center. His body will be cremated, and no services are planned at this time. Arrangements are under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Florencio was born in Sweetwater and has farmed this area most his life.
He is survived by two daughters, Mary Louise Garcia and husband Enrique of Bowie, Texas and Rosalinda Aguilar and husband Aaron of Pharr, Texas; and five grandchildren.
Ozella Marie Fritts of Abilene, Texas went to be with her Heavenly Father on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012, at Hendricks Medical Center in Abilene. She had 95 good years on this earth. She was a member of Victory Church in Abilene, where she was known as Granny. She was born July 3, 1917 to William F. and Haddie N. Gardner in Clyde, Texas. She had four brothers and four sisters that passed on before her.
Tadeo Canon-Masjoan has been named the Football Player of the Week for Sweetwater. Canon-Masjoan, who is a senior, is a defensive end and kicker.
He had five solo tackles, two for a loss, 10 assists, one sack and one fumble recovery against Monahans and also made all five extra point attempts.
