Edward (Eddie) Longoria, age 30, of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012 in Amarillo, Texas.
A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012 at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel, recited by Maria Herrera.
Christian funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Deacon Bill Butler officiating. Burial will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Sweetwater High Schoolâ€™s softball team is back on the road for a game at Merkel at 4 p.m. today.
Sweetwater is 6-2 overall after winning two of its three games at Sweetwaterâ€™s tournament. The Lady Mus-tangs began their event with a 13-2 win over Perryton this past Friday at the Jerry Collins Complex, lost to Clyde 8-5 later that day and beat Colorado City 6-3 in their final game Saturday.
The Sweetwater High School girls golf team shot a two-day total of 776 at the Sweetwater Classic for a third-place finish this past weekend.
Only Abilene High (707) and Abi-lene Cooper (719) finished ahead of Sweetwater, which was in fourth place after an opening 385 on Friday but moved up one position on Saturday after a finishing 391. Jim Ned (793) and Wylie (801) completed the top five, while Sweetwaterâ€™s No. 2 team shot 866 to place eighth and the No. 3 team shot 951 to place 12th among the 14 teams in the field.
After today, the Sweetwa-ter baseball team finally says goodbye to San Angelo.
Following a season-opening tie at Class 4A San Angelo Lake View and a split of its four games at Lake Viewâ€™s tournament this past week, the Mustangs will host the Class 5A San Angelo Central Bobcats at 7 p.m. today at Newman Park.
The man who left his 4-year-old son on the side of Interstate 20 last June was in court today.
Carlos Rico was found not guilty by reason of insanity in a Nolan County courtroom this morning after both sides waived their rights to a trial-by-jury.
Rico was found incompetent to stand trial last August after meetings with a clinical psychologist. In January, it was determined that Rico was actually able to stand trial, which took place today.
The Sweetwater High School Mustang Band participated in the UIL Region Solo and Ensemble Contest at Abilene High School. Sweetwater earned more solo medals than any other AAA, AA or A school at the competition. Twenty student musicians made 1â€™s on their solos.
The Sweetwater Fire Department held its annual MDA lockup on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012. Over 15 volunteers were locked up until they could raise their bond in donations. Sweetwater Healthcare Center administrator, Leslie Lane (right) was bailed out of MDA jail. She is seen accepting donation for MDAÂ from Cowboy Pump and Supply representative Tommy Coons (left). The proceeds from the event benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association and local families.
A national initiative will be commemorated locally on Friday, March 2, as Southeast Elementary School will take part in the NEA (National Education Association) Read Across America Day, a joint celebration of reading as well as the birthday of children's literature legend Dr. Seuss.
Incepted in May 1997, an NEA small reading task force created the idea with the basis of celebrating reading in the same excited manner of football and character building. Thus, the first Read Across America day took place on March 2, 1998, with the group choosing the date to honor Dr. Seuss' birthday.
Recently, the Blackwell FCCLA has been campaigning against bullying. They have done several activities, including Trick-or-Treating for a local women and childrenâ€™s shelter, inviting speakers from Gateway Family Services to inform students about bullying and also held a school-wide poster contest where each class created one poster to help increase knowledge of bullying and how it can be prevented. Also, the chapter adopted six children between the ages of 15, and one month. The children were sent three presents each.
Private services (family only) for Carol Jeane Moore, 80, of Roscoe, will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012, at 2:30 p.m. at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Don Wilson officiating. Cremation will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends from 6:30-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012, at McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater.
Moore died Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012, at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.
