Halford named EOY

The 2011 Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital Employee of the Year is Keri Halford. The announcement was made at the RPMH Christmas awards ceremony.
Halford was presented her plaque and monetary award by Rosa Best, CNO. Halford was described as dedicated and professional and one who goes above and beyond in her job duties. Best praised her for numerous compliments from co-workers and patients.

One pet available for adoption

Sweetwater Animal Control currently has one pet available for adoption.
The pet available for adoption this week is a male husky mix puppy, about one year old.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
The pets are required to have their vaccination before they leave to their new homes.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 120 calls for service, issued six citations and made three arrests from Dec. 23-26, 2011.

The SPD received 85, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Theft — 2000 block of E. Twelfth.
• Theft — 200 block of E. Fourth.
• Theft — 200 block of SE Georgia.

Arrested by SPD:
• Matthew Ausborn, 32 — Driving while intoxicated.
• Teresa Grayson, 48 — Public intoxication.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 41 calls for service, served six civil papers and made four arrests from Dec. 21-26, 2011.

Felton Newton Kerley

Felton Newton Kerley, 80, of Rockwall, Texas, passed away Dec. 25, 2011. Felton was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, as well as a beloved friend to many. He will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Felton was born on March 26, 1931 in Comanche, Texas to Elmer and Thelma Kerley. Felton graduated from Comanche High School in 1949. He later graduated from Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas in 1961 with a degree in business education.

Man dies in Christmas fire

A 41-year-old man died early Christmas morning in a fire in his Sweetwater home.
According to Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden, firefighters received a call about smoke coming from a house on the 200 block of Lewis Front Street between 2 and 3 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 25, 2011. "People saw smoke coming from the house and called 9-1-1."

STAAR students chosen at SMS

Shown are several eighth grade students who were chosen by their teachers as the third six weeks STAAR students for their hard work and dedication. Get ready Texas: Registering for agriculture sales tax exemption

Attention agriculture and timber producers: Secure your sales tax exemption by getting your registration number before the Jan. 1, deadline. Under a new state law passed by the Texas Legislature in 2011, commercial agriculture or timber producers will need an Ag/Timber Number issued by the Comptroller’s office to make eligible sales tax-exempt purchases for their business beginning Jan. 1, 2012.

Sergio Leonel Rivera, 41, of Sweetwater, died Sunday, Dec. 25, 2011, at his residence in Sweetwater.
His body was cremated and his ashes will be returned to his home in Guatemala.

Verna Allen

Verna Lee Allen, 89, died Saturday, Dec. 24, 2011, peacefully in the Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital. Services will be Wednesday, Dec. 28, at McCoy Funeral Home, 401 East 3rd in Sweetwater, with Ron McElyea officiating. Burial will follow at the Nolan Cemetery in Nolan, TX.
Verna Hamrick was born on March 8, 1922, in Sweetwater, Texas. She was the middle of three children, one older brother, J.J. and younger sister Irene all raised in Clyde, TX. She married James T. (J.T.) Allen on March 16, 1941 in Baird, TX.

Mary Ruth Prather

Mary Ruth Prather of Lubbock, Texas, passed away on Friday, Dec. 23, at the age of 77. She was born on March 10, 1934 to W.B. and Ruth Brown in Longworth, Texas. She attended schools in Sylvester and Roby, graduating from Roby High School in 1951. She attended Draughon’s Business College in Abilene, but later found her true calling as an in-home child care provider. She married Gerald Prather on Nov. 23, 1954, in San Angelo, Texas. They moved to Sweetwater in 1958, where they raised their family and lived until 2008 when they moved to Lubbock.
