Update: Williams sentenced

March 30, 2012

Update: Williams was sentenced to life in prison with a $10,000 fine, the maximum sentence he was faced with during the trial. Come back for the full story.

Update:
As day four of the trial against Robert Williams continued on Friday, March 30, 2012, a witness was called to the stand for the defense, one of Williams' former employers. Williams only spoke outside of the jury's presence and closing arguments began afterwards.
The jury came back around 12:45 p.m. and found Williams guilty. The punishment phase began around 2:15 p.m. and closing arguments began.

In commemoration of National Doctor’s Day on March 30, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) wants to recognize the doctors who dedicate their lives to ensure that we maintain the best health possible.
“In our time of need, our doctors are there for us. They save lives, literally, on a daily basis,” said Donna Boatright, administrator of RPMH. “I always think of doctors as some of our community’s most prominent heroes.”

Local farmer directs $2,500 through America’s Farmers Grow Communities

ROSCOE, Texas — Seventy percent of firefighters in the United States are volunteer and the only way for these departments to update and repair their lifesaving equipment is through community donations. The Roscoe Volunteer Fire Department faced a very dry year with many fires and is in need of extra funds to purchase new equipment. Thanks to one local farmer and America’s Farmers Grow Communities, the Roscoe Volunteer Fire Department can continue to keep its community and surrounding area safe.

Chamber honors FFB motor bank

First Financial Bank’s new motor bank officially opened to the public on Monday, Feb. 6, 2012. The new motor bank addition is located on the north side of the existing bank building on the corner of Broadway and Elm Street. There are six drive up lanes, a commercial lane, a night depository and a new state-of-the-art, deposit taking ATM. The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors honored the new addition with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday, March 28, 2012. President and CEO Kirby Andrews, along with wife, Leah Andrews, is shown cutting the ribbon.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 40 calls for service, issued eight citations and made one arrest on March 28, 2012.

The SPD received seven, 911 calls.

Accidents:
• 1500 block of Hailey.
• 500 block of E. Ave C.

Calls for service:
• Theft — 700 block of NE Georgia.
• Theft — 600 block of E. New Mexico.
Arrested by SPD:
• Michelle Castillo Jackson, 32 — Family violence assault/warrants.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had nine calls for service, served no civil papers and made one arrest on March 28, 2012.

SW golf teams 2nd after 1st district leg

Sweetwater’s golf teams are both close to the lead following the opening leg of their respective District 5-3A tournaments this week. The girls are just one shot out of the lead in their event after shooting a 356 in Wednesday’s first round at Abilene’s Maxwell Municipal Golf Course, while the boys shot a 320 and sit just three strokes out of the lead after the first round of their event which began Thursday at Snyder’s Western Texas College.

Texans prepare for season opener

The Sweetwater Texans youth football league team is shown during a recent practice. Sweetwater will take on the Abilene Buccaneers at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Abilene’s Taylor County Expo Center for its season opener and then plays Breckenridge at 11 a.m. Saturday. The league consists of fifth and sixth graders. This year’s coaches are Sammy Alvarez Jr., Joe Hall, Randy Melendez and John Castillo.

Beatrice Ortiz, age 79, of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, March 28, 2012, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 31, 2012, at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel with Jesse Ortiz officiating. Burial will follow at Roscoe Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

Grss fire in Nolan County

March 29, 2012

Approximately 40 acres burned in Nolan County on Thursday afternoon when a controlled burn became an uncontrolled burn. Two Sweetwater Fire Department trucks and the Trent Volunteer Fire Department tanker worked on the blaze with eight firemen working to extinguish the fire.

Williams trial continues

The second day of the Robert Williams trial took place on Wednesday, March 28, 2012 in the 32nd Judicial District Court at the Nolan County Courthouse.
The entire day was made up of further testimony from the lead investigator at the time of the incident, Tim Blount, formerly with the Nolan County Sheriff's Office. Several videos and a number of photographs were submitted to evidence and shown to the five-woman, seven-man jury.
