The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 40 calls for service, issued four citations and made no arrests on May 17, 2012.

The SPD received 25, 911 calls.

Accidents:
• 3700 block of W. Broadway.

Calls for service:
• Assault — 800 block of Circle Drive.
• Theft — 400 block of NE Georgia.
• Burglary of a habitation — 1400 block of Hughes.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 11 calls for service, served one civil paper and made one arrest on May 17, 2012.

Arrested by NCSO:
• Jerry Dewitt Washington, Jr., 27, of Sweetwater — Bench warrant.

Dorothy Johnson

Lubbock — Dorothy Johnson died May 18, 2012 in Lubbock at the age of 88. She was born Nov. 1, 1923 in Racine, Wisconsin to Christ and Louise Christensen. She was reared by her aunt and uncle, Hart and Tracy Webb of Kenosha, Wisconsin. Dorothy graduated from Kenosha High School in 1942. After high school she attended Milwaukee County Hospital School of Nursing in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin where she became a Registered Nurse and specialized in pediatrics.

Nolan County loses almost 2,500 pounds

The Big Country Biggest Winner contest came to a close on Thursday evening, May 17, 2012, at Newman Park. An awards ceremony took place with many teams present.

Rattlesnake Republic picked up for second season

On Wednesday night, June 22, 2011, the world was introduced to local resident and longtime Sweetwater Jaycee Riley Sawyers through the Animal Planet show "Rattlesnake Republic". Almost a year later, Sawyers recently found out that the show was picked up for a second season.

Relay for Life —Cancer fears the walker

Cancer Fears the Walker was the motto for this year's Nolan and Scurry County Relay for Life. Shown are members of area communities in the first lap — the Survivor Lap — celebrating those who have survived cancer or who are currently battling cancer.
Teams of Nolan and Scurry County residents gathered at the Sweetwater High Track on Friday, May 18, at 7 p.m. for an overnight relay against cancer. This year’s event marked the 10th anniversary of the Relay in Sweetwater.

Banquet speaker

Roscoe native Dan Hunter served as guest speaker at the sports banquet. Hunter is currently a professor at Tarleton State University in the College of Agriculture and Human Sciences.
He was previously chief executive office/manager of the Southwestern Peanut Growers’ Association. Prior to that, he served as the government relations representative for the National Cotton Council, and also worked as a primary legislative staff member for former Congressman Larry Combest as well as for Congressman Fred Grandy.

A graveside service for Lela Pearl Ohlhausen, 96, of Sweetwater will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 21, 2012, at Caps Cemetery near Abilene with her family officiating the service. Interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.

Nominations for members to serve on the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors are now being accepted through May 29. Nominations should be in writing and should include the name of the nominee, a brief justification of why the nominee should be approved and the name and contact information for the person submitting the nomination.

Industrial accident on wind farm

A worker with GE Wind Services was involved in an industrial accident on Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at the Trent-Mesa Wind Farm, located east of Sweetwater and off of Adrian Road at County Road 131.
The incident took place as the employee was working on a transformer. An electrical discharge occurred, letting off a bright flash at the scene. The worker was wearing a protective suit at the time, and the machine was still in tact after the accident.
