Mustang Baseball Camp: Monday through Thursday, June 11-14 at the Sweetwater High School baseball field (Sportsmanâ€™s Park) located inside New-man Park just south of Nolan County Coliseum. The first session for students entering grades 1-5 is from 9-10:15 a.m. while the second session for students entering grades 6-9 is from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Persons will need to register at least 15 minutes before each session begins June 11. Cost: $40, which includes a T-shirt. Rookie free agent Joseph Banyard, a running back who starred at Sweetwater and the University of Texas-El Paso, inked a three-year contract this past week with his second National Football League team, the New Orleans Saints.
Banyard also participated on a tryout basis in the Saintsâ€™ minicamp that was held from June 5-7 in New Orleans.
Following his transfer from Texas Christian where he initially committed, Banyard spent his final two years of college eligibility at Texas-El Paso where he rushed for a total of 1,490 yards with 14 touchdowns.

The Women of First Presbyterian Church Sweetwater made and donated plastic mats to the County-City Library. The mats are made out of plastic bags. The bags are cut and rolled into â€śplarnâ€ť plastic yarn and crocheted into mats. They began the project making mats for the homeless, but wanted to give locally. The mats will be used for the libraryâ€™s story times. â€śWe are very grateful for them thinking of an giving to the library,â€ť said Becky Brock.

Six students from Highland High School were inducted into membership of the National Honor Society in a ceremony held at the school.Â Members were selected by a faculty council for meeting high standards of scholarship, service, leadership and character. Students inducted were Brenden Huckabee (Jr), Brianne O'Ryan (Jr), Jordan Rowan (Sr), Putri Soedarsono (Jr), Lora Stewart (Jr) and Julia Tibbit (Jr).

Sweetwaterâ€™s Major League Dâ€™backs are celebrating after defeating the Snyder Braves 9-7 at their District 5 tournament this week. The team also beat the Jim Ned Rangers in their next game to reach the quarterfinals before losing to Abilene Dixieâ€™s Mets, 5-4, at Abilene Northern on Thursday.

For many children, the rural neighborhood, small town, or ranch is a home, a playground and a place where they do chores. Teaching them to take some of the responsibility for their own safety at home and in their neighborhoods is the subject of the eighth bi-annual Big Country Progressive Agriculture Safety Day, which will be held June 22, 2012, at the Big Country Hall located on grounds of the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene.
