'Dr. Burger Day' held at SIS, SMS

Math enthusiasm may be an oxymoron for many. But if anyone can get grade school kids fired up about arithmetic, it's Dr. Edward Burger.
Burger, who appeared at Sweetwater Intermediate School and Sweetwater Middle School on Friday, is a virtual rock star among mathematicians — as well as president of Southwestern University in Georgetown.

Sweetwater-Vernon baseball games cancelled

Tuesday's JV and varsity baseball games between Sweetwater and Vernon at Sportsman's Park have been cancelled due to rainy weather, according to Sweetwater head baseball coach Roland Herrera. The teams may attempt to reschedule one or both games for later this week.

Sweetwater wins 8-5 on Garcia’s walk-off homer

For the first 5 1/2 innings of their game Monday at Jerry Collins Complex, the Sweetwater and Ballinger softball teams struggled at the plate. However, the last 1 1/2 innings produced 12 runs — eight by Sweetwater, including a three-run, walk-off homer by Abby Garcia — for a thrilling 8-5 victory.

Over 3K pounds of rattlesnake brought in for 57th Round-Up

Thousands attended the 57th Annual Sweetwater Jaycees World’s Largest Rattlesnake Round-Up.
The total pounds of Western Diamondback Rattlesnake weighed totaled 3,780 pounds, a slight decrease from last year’s total of 3,890 pounds.

Sweetwater rallied from a 4-1 deficit with a six-run fourth and four-run fifth in a 13-9 softball win at Mona-hans on Friday.

‘Stangs lose to AHS to wrap up tourney

After ending its three-day, five-game gauntlet with a 9-3 loss to Abilene High on Saturday at the Abilene ISD Invitational tournament, Sweetwater’s baseball team has two more games this week to prepare for what it hopes will be a third straight run to the playoffs with the start of District 2-4A play.

Boys golfers place 3rd

The Sweetwater varsity boys golf team shot a 383 at Lamesa’s tournament to finish in third place. From left are Colton Scott, Mark Lawrence, Ky Hoover, Wesley Maxwell and Jeremy Witt. Witt (87) was the No. 2 medalist. Lawrence shot 92, Hoover 100, Scott 104 and Maxwell 114. Lawrence was tied for the No. 5 medalist spot.
