100 years of flight in Sweetwater

On a clear November day in 1911 the news of Robert Fowler’s approach in the Cole Flyer preceded him causing great excitement in the small West Texas town of Sweetwater. In fact, a holiday had been declared for the occasion and schools were even closed so everyone could witness the incredible landing of an airplane in an open field about a mile south of town.

Kyle Blaylock, age 39 of Bartlett, Texas, (former resident of Odessa, Texas), passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011 at Scott & White Hospital in Temple, Texas.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 26, 2011, at Blackwell First Baptist Church with Rev. John Curry officiating. Burial will follow at Blackwell Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of
Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

Dorothy M. Redden

Dorothy M. Redden 84, loving mother and grandmother, of Midland passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2011.
Dorothy was born on Dec. 15, 1926, to Archie Q. Self and Ella Callen (England) Self in Sweetwater, Texas. There was nothing that Dorothy held closer to her heart than her family and her faith. Dorothy was a member of Kelview Heights Baptist Church of Midland and a former member of Broadway Baptist Church in Sweetwater, Texas. She was also a member of AT&T Pioneers.

Wanda Faye Dunn

Wanda Faye Dunn was born on April 16, 1934, in Loraine, Texas. She passed away on Nov. 22, 2011, at Rolling Plans Memorial Hospital at 77.
Wanda graduated from Roscoe High School and devoted much of her life as a homemaker and later in life enjoyed working at Motts in Sweetwater, Texas, helping customers with fabrics and sewing notions.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Wanda is preceded in death by her parents, Robert Martin and Faye Martin; and brother, Robert Martin, Jr.

The SPD received 10, 911 calls.

• Interference with child custody — 200 block of E. Fourth.

Arrested by SPD:
• Michael Diggs, 25 — Criminal mischief.
• Patrick Hutson, 32 — Driving while intoxicated/driving with license invalid.
• Anthony Hunter, 23 — Warrants.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had nine calls for service, served three civil papers and made one arrest on Nov. 22, 2011.

The SPD received 33, 911 calls.

• Information only — 200 block of Fisher.
• Burglary of vehicle — 600 block of W. Third.

Retailers prepare for Black Friday

Retailers are making it even easier this year for shoppers to pull an all-nighter from Thanksgiving Thursday to Black Friday.
The unofficial holiday began in the 1960s to usher in the beginning of the Christmas shopping season, allowing for businesses to move from the "red" to the "black" in their financial records. Today, the rush of the sales and crowds in the stores have allowed for outlets to expand their early-morning hours even into the late night prior to Black Friday.

Robotics teams compete at regional level

November 23, 2011

Roscoe Collegiate High School and Sweetwater High School competed this past weekend in the BEST robotics regional competition in the Dallas. Event sponsor was the University of Texas at Dallas.
Approximately 1,500 students from 56 teams across Texas and New Mexico came to compete in presentations, exhibits, spirit and sportsmanship, engineering notebooks and robot performance.

Quail population declining, many possible causes

The Nolan County Extension Office and Leadership Advisory Board of the county recently held their annual Interpretive Luncheon on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011 at the Nolan County Courthouse.
Zach Wilcox, the AgriLife Extension agent for Nolan County, opened the "Making a Difference in Nolan County," lunch by thanking those who assisted in preparing the event and offered a brief overview of the year.
