The Texas Center for Quality & Patient Safety, an affiliate of the Texas Hospital Association, has received a grant from the Cardinal Health Foundation to improve medication safety in Texasâ€™ rural hospitals.
A new technology program for local middle and high schools is forming, but is in need of donations.
Texas State Technical College (TSTC) West Texas in Sweetwater will be hosting a robotics competition called BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology) Robotics for six weeks this fall. The goal is to start a new competition center in Sweetwater for the Big Country, but not without the help of community support, contributions and sponsorships.
The National WASP WWII Museum celebrated the Women Airforce Service Pilots of WWII at WASP HOMECOMING 2011 on May 28, of Memorial Day Weekend. Approximately 1,000 people from all around the U.S. attended the day-long event. Twenty-two WASP were present who trained at Avenger Field in 1943-44 to become the first women to ever fly military planes in the United States.

A graveside service for Jerry L. Fuqua, 57, of Sweetwater, will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 6, 2011, at Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene with Military Graveside Rites performed by the U.S. Army Honor Guard. Rev. Teddy Seales will officiate and interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home of Sweetwater.
Fuqua died Sunday, July 3, 2011, at his residence.
After suffering their first loss on Friday, Sweetwaterâ€™s 10-11 year-old Little League all-stars have rediscovered the magic that has them one win away from going to a sectional tournament for the second straight year.
Sweetwater, which fell to the losers bracket after an 8-6 defeat Friday against Wylie in the semifinals, got some sweet revenge with a 7-5 victory when the teams met again on Monday in the championship game at Sweetwaterâ€™s Major League field. Since both teams now have one loss, they will meet again at 7 p.m. today to decide the District 5 title at the same location.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 29 calls for service, issued no citations and made four arrests on June 30, 2011.
The SPD received 19, 911 calls.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 11 calls for service, served five civil papers and made one arrest on June 30, 2011.
After storming past their first two opponents, the Sweetwater 10-11 year-old all-stars looked to be on their way to another convincing win on Friday when they led 4-1 after the first 1 1/2 innings against Wylie. But one dramatic hit â€” a grand slam homer by Wylieâ€™s Conner Carlton â€” changed all that as the visitors rallied to defeat Sweetwater, 8-6, in their District 5 semifinal at Sweetwaterâ€™s Major League field that sent Wylie to Mondayâ€™s title game.
Sweetwaterâ€™s 9-10 and 13-14 (Junior League) all-star teams were eliminated Friday from their respective District 5 tournaments after losing for the second time, leaving the 10-11 year-0ld team as the lone survivor.
On Thursday, the 11-12 year-olds were eliminated after losing to Snyder 13-3.
A baseball team made up of 15- and 16-year-olds will be representing Sweetwater at a Texas West Section II Senior League tournament.
The 2011 tournament is set for July 13-16 in Garland and will include teams who represent four sections of the state. Sweetwater, which represents District 5, will be joined by teams from Dis-trict 7 (Fort Worth area), District 8 (Dallas area) and District 9 (Waco area).
The tournament will be hosted by South Garland Little League. Sweetwater will play its first game at 6 p.m. July 13 against the District 8 representative.
