Funeral services for James "Jimmy" LeRoy Stevens, 81, of Sweetwater, will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2011, at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Rev. Keith Clowers officiating. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
A visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2011, at McCoy Funeral Home.
Stevens died Sunday, Aug. 14, 2011, at his residence.
Funeral services for Dan William Carter, Sr., 89, of Sweetwater, will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 18, 2011, at First Presbyterian Church Chapel with Rev. Earl Stewart officiating. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Carter died Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011, at Sweetwater Healthcare Center.

TUESDAY, AUG. 16
Sweetwater teams play Seminole and Midland Lee at Seminole â€” matches will be played at 6:15 and 7:30 p.m., respectively.
THURSDAY, AUG. 18
Roscoe varsity and JV teams host San Angelo Grape Creek (scrimmage), 6 p.m.
Blackwell varsity hosts Patton Springs (scrimmage), 6 p.m.
FRIDAY, AUG. 16
Sweetwater teams host San Angelo Lake View (scrimmage) â€” freshmen at 5 p.m., JV at 6:15 p.m., varsity at 7:30 p.m.
WOODROW â€” While his teamâ€™s execution wasnâ€™t as crisp as heâ€™d hoped and the No. 1 unit failed to get into the end zone, Sweetwater head football coach Craig Slaughter was also encouraged by much of what he saw in the Mustangsâ€™ season-opening scrimmage with Lubbock Cooper as the teams battled to a 1-1 draw on Friday.
And the final result was clearly much better than in 2010 when Lubbock Cooper dominated the teamsâ€™ scrimmage at Sweetwater, winning by a 4-0 count.
School is almost in session, but before those school bells ring, one more thing is left to complete the summertime schedule.
This year's Tax Free Weekend marks 13 annual weekends that Texas has been generating savings for families in the Lone Star State, which will take place on Friday, Aug. 19 through Sunday, Aug. 21. Originally set for the first weekend of August, the dates were pushed back in 2007 so that the three-day holiday would be closer to the beginning of the school year.
Roy Benjamine Conely, 79, of Phoenix, Ariz., was pronounced dead at Hendrick Medical Center by Dr. Jack Needham at 9:45 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 11, 2011.
Conely was driving a 2005 Honda Odyssey east bound on Interstate 20 near mile marker 237 in Nolan County. The vehicle left the roadway, entering the center median and striking a concrete embankment at around 4 p.m. on Thursday. The weather was clear and the road was dry. Trooper Gilbert Valdez is investigating this crash.
Crane Service, Inc. will be lifting a huge chiller on the Angelo State University (ASU) campus starting on Monday, Aug. 15, 2011.
The company, which has an extension office in Sweetwater, is hoisting a 15,500 pound A/C Chiller above the San Angelo campus. The unit will be placed nearly a football field away from the crane.
WASP Madeline Sullivan Conley O'Donnell, a longtime resident of Menlo Park, California passed away peacefully on Aug. 4 at AlmaVia of San Francisco a few months after her 90th birthday.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1921, â€śMaddyâ€ť, was raised in Bellerose, Long Island, enlisted in the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP, Class 44-2) under Jacqueline Cochran and spent two years doing something she absolutely loved â€” flying. She flew mostly bombers (B-26 Marauders).
Mustang Moms have initiated a new program called "Adopt-A-Mustang." The program is designed to let students from kindergarten through sixth grade "adopt" either a varsity football player or a varsity volleyball player. Students have the chance to adopt a varsity football player or varsity volleyball player on Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2011 after Meet the Mustangs, which starts at 8:30 p.m. Registration will be held immediately after Meet the Mustangs at the bowl and costs $25.
The driver of a Honda Odyssey was airlifted via Native Air to Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene on Thursday afternoon around 5 p.m. The driver was said to have lost control of his vehicle, driving between the guardrails and off of an Interstate 20 bridge near Cemetery Road, just east of Roscoe. The vehicle impacted the concrete below the bridge and climbed up to the median before stopping. The driver was listed in stable condition.
