It’s beginning to look a lot like...

Wintry weather is now upon us this first week of December with snowfall continuing from Sunday night, Dec. 4, 2011. Snowfall continued on Monday morning and is expected to continue the rest of the day with a slight mix of rain expected in the afternoon. The high in Sweetwater will be 34 with a low around 23 for Monday night, with wind chill values as low as 10 according to the National Weather Service. Dessert Concert still on

December 5, 2011

The Sweetwater Choral Department is hosting a Dessert Concert Fundraiser in the Sweetwater High School Cafeteria on Monday, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m. This concert will feature students from the SMS Choirs, along with Choir Soloists, and the SHS Pops Sensations. Tickets are $10 a person. Proceeds to benefit the SISD Choral Department's Festival Trips and New Sound Equipment.

$699 raised at toy drive

Ken Becker accepts a toy from Jacob and Jordan Blain at the annual Goodfellows toy drive held on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011, at Wal-Mart. A total of 287 toys were donated and $699.90 was raised at the drive, bringing the current total raised to $3,784.90.

Legislative forum with Representative King

Representative Susan L. King and Taylor Electric Cooperative will host a legislative forum on Thursday, Dec. 8 at the Texas Forest Service Offices located at 1610 North 1st Street in Merkel, TX.
Representative King will open the forum at 10 a.m. with a short presentation welcoming her constituents, which will be followed by an open discussion with opportunities for questions and answers. 
Town halls are being held in various locations throughout District 71 to allow greater access for those who are interested in meeting with Rep. King.

Domitila Tovar Covarrubius

Funeral services for Domitila Tovar Covarrubius, 92, of Roscoe, will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 9, 2011, at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Rev. Fabio Perez officiating. Interment will follow at Roscoe Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Covarrubius died Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in Sweetwater.
She was born June 3, 1919, in Laguna Seca, Hidalgo, Mexico. She married Victoriano Covarrubius. She was a housewife and moved to Roscoe in 2000. She was a member of the Christian Evangelical Spiritual Church in Sweetwater.

Willie Hardy "Bill" Carey

Funeral services for Willie Hardy “Bill” Carey, 101, of Sweetwater, will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011, at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Rev. James Baker officiating. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Carey died Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in Sweetwater.
He was born June 25, 1910, in Weatherford, Texas. Bill was a farmer and rancher and had lived in Nolan and Mitchell Counties all his life. He attended the Church of Christ in Roscoe.

Eight Hornets are all-district

Eight Highland football players have earned all-District 6, Division I six-man recognition.
Those named to the first team for Highland were Tyler Falcon at running back and linebacker, Ron Covington on special teams and safety, Jordan Rowan at wide receiver and Steven Tester as a defensive lineman.
Those named to the second team for Highland were Covington at quarterback, Tester at running back, Garrett Stewart as a defensive lineman, Michael Hyde at utility back and linebacker, Peyton Howard at fullback and cornerback and Shelby Howard at wide receiver and as a utility player.

SHS sets football banquet for Dec. 12 at coliseum annex

Sweetwater High School will hold its annual football banquet Monday, Dec. 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex.
The tickets to this year’s banquet will be available for $10 each at the SHS field-house until noon on Dec. 8. SHS football players, cheer-leaders and student trainers will not be required to buy a ticket. The junior varsity White and Red and varsity teams will be recognized for their hard work and dedica-tion this year, and cheerleaders and student trainers will also also be introduced and thanked for their con-stant support. A highlight video will also be shown.

Mustangs win in OT; Lady Stangs lose two

Down by seven (33-26) at the end of three periods, the Sweetwater boys basketball team forced overtime and edged host team Coahoma, 43-42, on Friday to even its record at 1-1 at the three-day tourney. Taylor Jones’ 14 points and Kaleb Hoover’s 13 paced Sweetwater (3-4), which tied the game 37-37 at the end of regulation.
