Two Sweetwater Little League all-star teams have advanced to the District 5 elimination round and will play semifinal games in Abilene today, while a third local team narrowly missed joining them.
Sweetwaterâ€™s 11-12 year-olds advanced by shutting out Merkel 6-0 in their final pool game to finish with a 2-1 record, and join the three pool winners as as a wild card entry after having the lowest runs-allowed per inning ratio of the pool runnerups.
A Sweetwater team com-prised of 16-18 year-olds, all of whom played for Sweet-water High Schoolâ€™s varsity baseball team this past year, represented District 5 this past weekend when it played at a Big League Section 2 tournament in Garland.
Sweetwater won its first two games to reach Sundayâ€™s championship game before losing twice to Arlington, which advanced to play in a Big League state tournament at All Saints High School in Fort Worth starting this Friday.
Avondale Baptist Church will be having Vacation Bible School July 8-11. They will kick off the week Saturday morning, July 7 with a Block Party on the corner of Hailey and Lou Streets across from the Village Apartments for the entire community.
At the block party the church will have games with prizes. They will have cotton candy, pop corn, snow cones and hot dogs for lunch. They will start the day off at 9:30 a.m. and end around 12:30 p.m. All ages are invited.
Reserved season tickets for the 2012 football season will be up for renewal to current option holders beginning Monday, July 9 through Friday, Aug. 3.
Tickets are $30 for five home games and may be purchased at the Sweetwater ISD administration office. Reserved ticket sales for the general public go on sale on Monday, Aug. 6 during regular business hours and continue through Friday, Aug. 24. Nolan County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director Dennis Cumbie, announced that county committee election nominations began June 15, 2012. Farmers, ranchers and landowners are encouraged to nominate farmer and rancher candidates to serve on their local FSA county committee by the August 1, 2012 deadline.
Elected county committee members serve a three-year term and are responsible for making decisions on FSA disaster, conservation, commodity, and price support programs, as well as other important federal farm program issues.
Encompass Home Health in Sweetwater hosted a fan drive, giving away box fans free to the public on Friday, June 29, at their local office, located at 1008 Lamar Street.
Encompass Home Health staff identified a need for this service while making home visits in and around the area. They noted that many of the elderly did not have air-conditioning or simply would not run their air-conditioner because of high utility costs.
Texans who are eligible to vote, but not yet registered are almost out of time to register to vote in the July 31, 2012 Primary Runoff Elections. Funeral services for Martha Allene DeBusk, 99, of Lubbock, formerly of Sweetwater, will be held on Thursday, July 5, 2012, at 11 a.m. at McCoy Chapel of Memories. Rev. Chris Stephens will be officiating with interment to follow at Sweetwater Cemetery, under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends Thursday morning from 10 a.m. until service time at McCoy Funeral Home.
DeBusk died Saturday, July 1, 2012, at Hospitality House Nursing Home in Lubbock.
