Highland girls are champions at own tourney

December 12, 2011

Living up to their No. 17 ranking, the Highland girls basketball team finished as the champions of their own Hilltop Classic tournament on Saturday.
After beating Roscoe 45-13 in Friday’s semifinals, the Lady Hornets (11-3) won the championship by defeating Garden City 36-25 at Highland’s gym.

SW teams get wins at Stanton

The Sweetwater girls completed play at Stanton’s basketball tournament with a pair of wins on Friday as they defeated Stanton’s JV and Brownfield’s varsity by scores of 52-20 and 49-38, respectively.
The Sweetwater boys, who are also playing at Stanton, began Friday by defeating Crane 52-48 in overtime before losing 53-36 to Wall in the consolation semis.
For the girls (8-8), Alicia Finn had 16 vs. Stanton’s JV while Kinsey Browning had 15 points and Candice Hernandez 13 in the game against Brownfield.

SMS girls take consolation titles at Big Spring tourneys

Both of the Sweetwater Middle School girls’ White teams captured consolation titles at a Big Spring tourna-ment held recently.
The eighth grade White team lost to Seminole 14-7 before coming back to de-feat Andrews 16-13 and then beat Snyder 26-14 to win consolation.
Hanna Hayes, Peyton Moore and Alyssa Villanue-va had two points and Ash-ley Parker one vs. Seminole; Moore scored six points, Marisa Moncada five, Villa-nueva three and Ashley Bax two vs. Andrews; and in the consolation final against Snyder, Villanueva had 15, Parker six, Moncadad three and Bax two.

Football banquet slated for Monday

Sweetwater High School will hold its annual football banquet Monday, Dec. 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex.
The junior varsity White and Red and varsity teams will be recognized for their hard work and dedication this year, and cheerleaders and student trainers will also also be introduced and thanked for their con-stant support. A highlight video will also be shown.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 44 calls for service, issued six citations and made one arrest on Dec. 8, 2011.
The SPD received 18, 911 calls.
Calls for service:
• Theft — 1800 block of Rose.
• Theft — 700 block of SW Georgia.
• Suicide — 700 block of SW Georgia.

Helen R. Allen

December 10, 2011

GRANBURY — Helen R. Allen, 80, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2011.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 16, at Skyvue Victoria Chapel. Burial will follow at Skyvue Memorial Gardens under the direction of Skyvue Funeral Home. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. on Friday.
Survivors include her daughter, Norma Spencer-Feuerborn and husband Charles; son, Vernon E. Johnston and wife Renee; sister, Faye Edmondson; grandchildren, Christopher and Ryan Elliott, and Sean Johnston; and seven great-grandchildren.

Pets in need of homes

Sweetwater Animal Control currently has six pets available for adoption.
One of the adoptable pets is a white and brown male mixed breed dog. Another is a brown male chihuahua mix. Also available are two boxers, one male and one female, a female Alaskan Husky and a female German Shepherd.
According to Sweetwater's new animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
