Possession, injury to a child cases heard in District Court

Four people pled guilty to Judge Glen Harrison during 32nd Judicial District Court proceedings on Monday, March 12, 2012, with District Attorney Ann Reed and Assistant District Attorney Barrett Thomas prosecuting the cases.
With attorney Russell Abound, Vicki Virdiana Guerrero and Raven Javon Weaver both pled guilty to possession of marijuana, prosecuted as a second degree felony. The two were in possession of more than 50 pounds of marijuana, but less than 2,000 pounds, on May 4, 2011, according to their original indictments.

During their regular meeting on Monday morning, March 12, 2012 held at the Courthouse, the Nolan County Commissioners approved a contract with West Texas Centers to purchase all laboratory testing services associated with their services and for inmates covered under the county's agreement with the establishment.

Enchanted Darlings pageant slated for June in Sweetwater

The inaugural Enchanted Darlings pageant is opening the door for area kids and teens to strut their stuff.
The "Beauty Pageant with Elegance" will be held at the LaQuinta Inn, located at 500 Northwest Georgia Avenue in Sweetwater, on Saturday, June 9, 2012 starting at 10 a.m. The pageant is open to girls all the way up to 18 years old and boys up to 6 years of age.

Cook-Off, Salsa/Dessert Challenge results announced

An estimated crowd of 30,000 attended the 54th Annual Sweetwater Jaycees World's Largest Rattlesnake Round-Up. Winners of the 22nd Annual Brisket/Chili Cook-Off were announced with a total of 93 cooks entering the contest this year. Judging coordinator was Jean Gebhard. Grand Champion was Bernie Phillips and Reserve Champion was Dana Reed.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 174 calls for service, issued five citations and made six arrests from March 9-11, 2012.

The SPD received 87, 911 calls.

Accidents:

• 300 block of Arizona.
• 1200 block of Elm.
• 200 block of E. Broadway.

Calls for service:
• Aggravated assault — 800 block of Circle Drive.
• Stalking — Sweetwater.
• Criminal mischief — 600 block of SW Georgia.
• Burglary of a habitation — 700 block of Walnut.
• Theft — 400 block of NE Georgia.

Arrested by SPD:
• Bobby Sanchez, 38 — Theft.

Ignacia Paulina Hernandez

Fort Worth — Ignacia Paulina Hernandez, 52, passed away Saturday, March 20, 2012. Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at Oakwood Cemetery in Fort Worth, Texas. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Survivors include her mother, Ignacia Lopez Gauna; three brothers; four sisters; and several nieces, nephews and other family members.
Arrangements are under the direction of Calvario Funeral Chapel.

Highland girls 1st at Blackwell

The Highland girls track team won the team title Saturday at Blackwell’s Hornet Relays by scoring 143 points for a 71-point win over Stamford, which was second with 72 points.
The host Blackwell girls scored 66 points to place fifth at the meet.
Highland placed first in four events and was second in four others. Its winners were Madison Moseley in the 1600 run (6:16.18) and the triple jump (31-5 1/2), Lora Stewart in the 400 dash (1:06.12) and the 800 relay of Morgan Monroe, Sierra Allen, Stewart and Moseley (1:59.78).

Netters bring home 7 medals

The Sweetwater High School tennis team brought home seven medals at a one-day tournament last Thursday in Brownwood.
Sweetwater’s winners were the mixed doubles team of Chris Hernandez and Madison Meneses; the ‘B’ girls doubles team of Vida Gamez and Teresa Perez Poe; and Shannon Gray in ‘C’ girls singles.
Taking second for Sweet-water was the boys doubles ‘B’ team of Zac Bax and Billy Reeves, while the ‘A’ boys doubles team of Isaiah Hernandez and Bryan Vause finished third in their category.
Sweetwater’s next tour-nament will be March 23-24 at Levelland.

Mustangs beaten by Andrews

After losing five games to bad weather this past week at the Abilene tournament, the Sweetwater High School baseball team hosted a tough Andrews squad on Monday.
Unfortunately, the visi-ting Mustangs took the lead with a five-run third inning and left town with a 13-2, six-inning victory at Newman Park.
Andrews finished with 15 hits off three Sweetwater pitchers as the Mustangs’ record fell to 6-5-1.
Sweetwater will be back on the road to face Wall at 11 a.m. Friday for its final pre-district game. The team will host Wylie in its 5-3A opener next Tuesday.

Rattlesnake Round-Up results announced

An estimated crowd of 30,000 attended the 54th Annual Sweetwater Jaycees World's Largest Rattlesnake Round-Up.
The total pounds of Western Diamondback Rattlesnake weighed totaled 1,664 pounds, a decrease from last year's total of 1,841 pounds. Those bringing in the most pounds of rattlesnake were first place Andy Lee with 348 pounds, second place Eric Timaeus with 224 pounds and third place Bill Stinson with 207 pounds. The longest rattlesnake was caught by Eric Timaeus and measured 73 inches long.
