Today the Sweetwater Police Patrol Association called on the Sweetwater City Council to take a stronger role in the search for a replacement of longtime Police Chief Jim Kelley.
âThis city is about to choose the first new police chief in 28 years,â said Charley Wilkison, Director of Public Affairs at the Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas, or CLEAT. âItâs a big step and the local association has asked to be a part of the selection process but have been told ânoâ by the City Manager.â
Gordon I. Root, 61, passed away on March 25, 2012, after a three year battle with Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS). Born in Westfield, MA, Gordon retired to West Texas six years ago to begin writing a series of books commemorating the 100 year anniversary of World War I. Before falling ill he had completed three of the set including Battles East, Battles in the Alps and Balkan Battles under the pen name G. Irving Root.

Robert Williams was found guilty of engaging in organized criminal activity and was given a life imprisonment sentence with a $10,000 fine on Friday afternoon, March 30, 2012 by a seven-man, five-woman jury in the 32nd Judicial District Court.
The day began with a sole witness for the defense, a former employee of Williams named Vince Johnson. Johnson employed the defendant on a couple of local roofing projects in September 2010 as noted in found employment records. Williams was paid in cash for the projects, which was typical of day help.
Cub Scout Pack #146 held an official flag ceremony for First Financial Bank's new flags earlier this week. Cub Scouts involved in the ceremony included Joshua Reeves, Xander Hilton Tucker, Grady Kidd, Nolan Mims, Jackson Ashford, Hayden Baker, Tristan Baker, Noah Hanner, Crae Chapman, Jordan Amos, Jacob Carter and Logan Wedin with Cub Scout leaders Scott Whittenburg, Mark Mims and Martin Baker. Snacks were provided for the Cub Scouts by First Financial Bank after the ceremony.
The Taste of Sweetwater is an annual event people of Sweetwater and the surrounding areas have come to enjoy. It is a chance for residents to sample foods from many local restaurants and other food establishments under one roof. This year, the event will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Monday, April 9, at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex. The cost is $10 for adults, $6 for seniors and $4 for children ages 3-12.
The Jazz Ambassadors is the United States Army's premier touring big band. This 19-member ensemble, formed in 1969, has received great acclaim both at home and abroad performing America's original art form, jazz.
The U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors of Washington, D.C., will continue its long history of presenting free public performances when it appears at the Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium on Monday night, April 2, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. The Jazz Ambassadorsâ concert in Sweetwater is sponsored by the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce.
