The 2012 Sweetwater High School baseball team had 11 of its players receive all-district baseball honors in a season that saw them compete for the playoffs until losing a one-run lead in the last inning of their final game with Big Spring.
Pitcher James Clift, first baseman Greg Aiken, catcher Sean Morrow and outfielder Willie Norman made the first team. Aiken also made the first team in 2011. Morrow and Norman were named first team after being second-team picks in 2011, and Clift was also named to the all-district first team for the first time.
Sweetwater High School is announcing the top ten graduates from the Class of 2012.

Workforce Solutions of West Central Texas announced that 39 Roscoe Collegiate High School students earned a National Career Readiness Certificate in May. Upperclassmen took three sections of the national assessment to measure their skills in the foundational areas of Reading for Information, Applied Mathematics and Locating Information. Based on their results, students were awarded a certificate in one of four levels: bronze, silver, gold or platinum. This certificate serves as a common language between employers, job seekers, educators and economic developers.
The Area 2 FFA Convention was held at the local TSTC (Texas State Technical College) West Texas campus at the Center on Friday, May 18, 2012.
Students all the way from El Paso and across Texas to Haskell were in attendance, interviewing for scholarship awards and outstanding student awards in their respective grade levels.
Attendees were also involved with proficiency awards for excellence in certain agricultural fields and participated in speaking events to qualify and advance to the state level convention.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 142 calls for service, issued 21 citations and made seven arrests from May 18-20, 2012.
The SPD received 77, 911 calls.

Funeral services for Melvin Thomas "MT" Wilkinson, Jr., 75, of Sweetwater, will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 24, 2012, at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Rev. Eric Horton officiating. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 23, 2012, from 7-9 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home.
Wilkinson died Monday, May 21, 2012, at his home in Sweetwater.
A new food handlers course accredited by the Texas Department of State Health Services is being offered by Texas AgriLife Extension Service. Food Safety: Itâ€™s In Your Hands is being brought to the area by Texas AgriLife Extension Nolan County Office, in cooperation with the Nolan County Health Department. The class is scheduled for May 29, 2012, starting at 2 p.m. This class will be held at the Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department which is located 301 East 12th Street, Sweetwater, TX 79556.
Texas State Technical College West Texas has received a $278,712 grant from the Office of the Texas Comptrollerâ€™s Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) Grant Program.Â
Renee Carey was recently announced as the 2011-2012 Teacher of the Year within Sweetwater Intermediate School (SIS) for Sweetwater ISD.
For the past eleven years, Carey has been with the school district, with a total of 16 years of teaching under her belt. Carey currently serves as a 4th grade teacher.
