VFW presents flag to Lang Aycock

Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post #2479 presented, in honor of all Veterans, a U.S. flag to Lang Aycock for the future men and women in the military. VFW members Lionel Mendez and Bill Lawhon presented the flag. "Freedom is our heritage," they said.

State rests in Childers case

The state rested their case against Aubrey Phillip Childers shortly before 3 p.m. on Thursday afternoon, Nov. 10, 2011 at the Nolan County Courthouse. Mr. Childers is on trial in regards to a male-on-male sexual assault which occurred in the southwest part of Sweetwater on or around Aug. 15, 2010.
The fourth day of the trial allowed the jury — comprised of nine women and three men — to hear testimony from involved law enforcement, witnesses from the night in question and scientific experts who analyzed evidence.

Ena “Joyce” Chipman

Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011, Ena Joyce Chipman completed her long and fruitful journey as wife, mother and mentor. Born Feb. 22, 1929, to V. L. and Ena Inez Elliott in Sweetwater, she grew up in West Texas, graduating in 1946 from Sweetwater’s Newman High School. Matriculating at Hardin-Simmons University, she subsequently, in 1948, met and married Stanley D. Chipman. In the following years, she established a home, produced three children and completed baccalaureate and master’s degrees.

Joyce Harris

Joyce Harris, 82, of Big Spring, died Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011, at her residence. The family will receive friends from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Thursday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11, 2011, at Myers & Smith Chapel with Rev. Don Snipes, officiating.  Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. at the Sweetwater Cemetery.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 35 calls for service, issued two citations and made one arrest on Nov. 9, 2011.

The SPD received 29, 911 calls.

Arrested by SPD:
• Mendon Kill, 24 — Driving while intoxicated.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 10 calls for service, served one civil paper and made one arrest on Nov. 9, 2011.
Arrested by NCSO:
• Jeremiah Joel Heuton, 25, of Brownwood — Warrant/motion to revoke probation.

Calls for service:
• Reckless driver — I-20 MM 223 east bound.
• Medical emergency — Hickory Street, Roscoe.

White Flag Mustangs play again Saturday

November 11, 2011

The Sweetwater White Flag Mustangs, a Pee Wee football team made up of 5-and-6-year-olds, is shown during and after their 40-18 playoff win over Abilene’s Jets at Abilene’s Curly Hays Field this past Saturday. The Mustangs hope to celebrate another win when they return to Abilene this Saturday to face the Abilene Bucs in the next round of the playoffs.

N-County has three playoffs today

Sweetwater and Blackwell are hosting a total of three high school football playoff games today.
In Class 1A, Division I, Seymour (8-2) plays New Deal (7-3) at 7:30 p.m. at Sweetwater’s Mustang Bowl while in Six-Man, Blackwell is hosting a doubleheader.
Sterling City (8-2) will take on Panther Creek (6-4) at 5:30 p.m., followed by Paint Rock (8-2) taking on Loraine (7-3) at 8 p.m. to complete the doubleheader.
Snyder and Brownwood both kicked off their playoff runs with double-digit vic-tories on Thursday.

Police interview video shown

Day three of the Aubrey Phillip Childers case continued on Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011, at the Nolan County Courthouse.
Testimony was heard from three local law enforcement who were involved in the case in the early morning. The jury also saw two video interviews of Mr. Childers with Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) Detective Sam Cunningham, which spanned most of the day.
Mr. Childers is on trail for an incident occurring on or around Aug. 15, 2010, regarding a male-on-male sexual assault which took place around the southwest part of Sweetwater.

Burn remained controlled

Many stopped near a large cloud of smoke between Sweetwater and Roscoe on Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011 and many in town wondered what caused the smoke cloud. A local landowner had permission from Nolan County to create a controlled burn once winds from the north stopped. Part of the burn was near an abandoned house and members of the Sweetwater Fire Department were called and stood by for good measure. The burn remained under control.

Local church helps with Pass Program

On Oct. 15, members from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Sweetwater went to Brownwood to take part in their town's Pride for Areas Surrounding Schools (PASS) program. Over 250 came from the churches in Abilene, Brownwood, San Angelo, Eastland, Sweetwater and Brady. Donning yellow slipover tops which read "Mormon Helping Hands," they scraped and painted eight homes near the Brownwood Intermediate School. The purpose was to beautify the neighborhood around the school and to make it a safer environment through which the students walk each day.
