Herbert E. (Toby) Davenport, age 81, of Hobbs, New Mexico (Former resident of Sweetwater, Texas) passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011, in Hobbs, New Mexico.Â

Gay Martin, age 70 of Sweetwater, Texas passed away on Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011, at her residence.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011, at Word of God Church with Pastor Dale Stowe officiating. Burial will follow at Hobbs Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
The Sweetwater girls basketball team ended a four-game slide by winning twice Thursday at the Ballinger tournament. The Highland girls, meanwhile, did the same with a couple of wins on Thursday at the Bronte tournament as they exten-ded their winning streak to seven games.
Highland (7-1) slipped by Bronte 37-36 in its first game as Kara Hughey scored 15 points and Sierra Allen and Beth Richburg nine each, and then downed Colorado City 31-14 as Allen had 13 points.
In July of this year, Abilene radio station Power 103 announced that ProScout, a talent scouting company, would be visiting Abilene looking for models, actors and good talent. Company reps go from state to state looking for talent.
The Nolan County Hospital District Board of Directors met for their regular monthly meeting on Monday evening, Nov. 28, 2011 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH).
The board meeting opened with a discussion of a possible change to the May uniform election date to November. RPMH Administrator Donna Boatright, along with the Nolan County Clerk Pat McGowan, led the discussion on what potential possibilities and options were available.
Pio MuĂ±oz, right, was the top finalist in the Nolan County Truck Roadeo for TxDOTâs Abilene District and was recognized by District Engineer Lauren GarduĂ±o, P.E. MuĂ±oz, a maintenance section assistant, earned the right to represent his maintenance section in the district-wide Roadeo held recently in Abilene and competed against 33 other drivers. The Texas Department of Transportation sponsors the annual Roadeo as part of the fleet safety training. The drivers are tested on several skills involving vehicle inspection, backing, stopping, docking and other safe driving habits.
Jerod Peek, Sweetwater Rotary Club President, presented a check for $500 to Sweetwater Goodfellows Vice President Ken Becker.Â Donations to the Sweetwater Goodfellows will help local children and families during the Christmas season.Â Sweetwater Goodfellows provides food and toys to local families in need with children and food to needy individuals during the Christmas season. The schedule for this year includes a toy drive at Wal-Mart on Saturday, Dec. 3, with distribution of the toys and food on Wednesday, Dec. 9.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 50 calls for service, issued 16 citations and made no arrests on Nov. 29, 2011.

Martha Burleson passed away at home, with family by her side, on Nov. 26, 2011, following a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 59.
She was born May 9, 1952, in Sweetwater, Texas to C.W. and Izadora Lewis.
Martha was survived by her husband, Homer Burleson, Jr.; daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and Kent Marquess; son and daughter-in-law, Shane and Jennifer Burleson; grandson, Jacob Burleson and numerous other loving family members and friends.
Memorial services will be Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011, at Trinity Baptist Church in Sweetwater, Texas.
Geraldine âJerryâ Stewart, 87, went to be with her Lord and Savior Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011, at her sonâs home in Fisher County, Texas.
She was born in Elk City, Okla. on April 9, 1924, to her parents, Slater and Velma Smith.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011, at First Baptist Church in Sweetwater with Rev. Phillip Thomas officiating. Interment will follow at the Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6-7:30 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home, 401 E. Third Street in Sweetwater.
