SIS Jump Rope Team performs at game

January 30, 2012

The Sweetwater Intermediate School Jump Rope Team performed at halftime during the Varsity girls basketball game on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2012. They will be performing Tuesday, Jan. 31 at Abilene Christian University at the 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. games and on Thursday, Feb. 2 at Western Texas College at the 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. games.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 53 calls for service, issued two citations and made two arrests on Jan. 26, 2012.

The SPD received 37, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Burglary of a habitation — 1000 block of Beall.
• Class A assault — 900 block of Hillside.

Arrested by SPD:
• Maria Limon, 39 — Warrant.
• Timothy Cantu, 18 — Warrant.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had eight calls for service, served six civil papers and made no arrests on Jan. 26, 2012.

• Inmate transport/medical — E. Arizona Ave.

Timothy Scott Gray

Timothy Scott Gray of the Champion community died Friday, Jan. 27, at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas due to complications from a chronic illness.
He was the loving husband of Kimberly Gray and father to Dustin and Kylie Gray, all of Champion, south of Roscoe, Tx.
Tim was born Nov. 19, 1972 in St. Louis, Mo. to Kimberly Jo Areno and Gary Edwin Gray. He lived in St. Louis during his childhood, then moved to Victoria, Texas where he was raised by his mother and step father, Chris Jochen during his teen years.

Mary Lily Cartwright, age 84, of San Augustine, Texas, (former resident of Sweetwater, Texas) passed away on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012, at Memorial Health System of East Texas in Lufkin, Texas.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 30, 2012 at Garden of Memories with Rev. Brian Brownlow officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

Will realignment mean big change?

Basketball season is nearing the end while baseball, golf, softball, tennis and track are about to start.
But football will be fore-most on the minds of many people who follow Texas high school sports when the University Interscholastic League on Thursday an-nounces its realignment for the next two years.
That’s because football begins and sets the tone for the new school year, and its players will be the first to compete in the new districts announced by the UIL.

Highland girls will return to playoffs; Plowgirls win

The Highland girls will be in the playoffs for the 11th consecutive year after defeating Loraine, 63-52, on Friday behind a 34-point effort from Sierra Allen.
Lora Stewart and Jes-sica McCain each had nine, Beth Richburg and Megan Thompson four and Kara Hughey three for Highland (8-2 in District 11-A, Divis-ion II, 20-7 overall).
Roscoe’s girls also helped their playoff chances Friday, pulling into a third-place tie by beating Haskell 34-29 in District 9-A, Division I. The teams are both 3-4.

Portions of Texas interstate highways to see speed limit increase

AUSTIN—Miles and miles of Texas highway will soon see speed limit increases following Thursday’s Texas Transportation Commission action approving 75 mph designations for close to 1,500 miles of interstate.
The speed limit changes span 60 Texas counties making it the largest conversion since a new law was passed last year. The 82nd Texas Legislature passed and the Governor signed House Bill 1353 which allows the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to establish 75 mph speed limits on Texas highways providing speed studies show it can be done safely.
