A talented group of Sweetwater 11-12 year-old Little League all-stars will be taking on Burkburnett in a Texas West Section 2 tournament at Carrollton starting at 7:30 p.m. today.
This is the third straight year for most of the teamâ€™s players to be in a sectional tournament after winning the District 5 tournament in Abilene. It began in 2010 when the vast majority of them traveled to Fort Worth to play on a 9-10 year-old team and continued in 2011 when they went to Waco as 10-11 year-olds.

Area officers from the Nolan County Sheriffâ€™s Office, Sweetwater Police Department and Texas Department of Public Safety were trained over the last two days in high performance tactical police driving maneuvers. Four specialized driving instructors and one intern came to Sweetwater to offer the instruction that covered two days. All of the instructors were Troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety, according to Sheriff David Warren.
The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce will hold its monthly Chamber Coffee event at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 12, 2012, at the Sweetwater Country Club, located at 1901 Country Club Drive, and will be co-hosted by the Texas Department of Agriculture Commissioner Rick Rhoades, who is the administrator for rural affairs and Robert Howden of Texans For Economic Progress. AT&T will also co-host the event. Randy Teakell is the local AT&T manager.
A trial began on Tuesday, July 10, 2012, in the 32nd Judicial District Court against Larry Clarence Staton with Judge Don L. Jarvis officiating. District Attorney Ann Reed and Assistant District Attorney Barrett Thomas are prosecuting the case and Jeffrey Allen is the attorney for the defense.
Staton has been charged with indecency with a child by contact, a second degree felony and indecency with a child by exposure, a third degree felony. The indictment states that the offenses occurred on Sept. 1, 2010 to a child younger than 17 years of age.
The SEED (Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development) Board of Directors met for their monthly meeting on Monday morning, July 9, 2012 at the Chamber of Commerce.
Among the action items from the meeting was the 2012-2012 FY (fiscal year) budget, which was approved. A sample budget had been discussed at the June meeting, with a complete budget prepared and proposed to the board by SEED Executive Director Ken Becker during this meeting.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 57 calls for service, issued five citations and made two arrests on July 9, 2012.

Jane Ernestine Hays, age 85, went to be with her Heavenly Father on July 11, 2012. She passed away at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in Sweetwater. Funeral services will be held at Trinity Baptist Church in Sweetwater on Sunday, July 15, 2012, at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Ward Hayes officiating. Interment will be at Sweetwater Cemetery. McCoy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Jane was born May 20, 1927 in Cochran, Georgia.

Avondale Baptist Church hosted a block party on the corner of Hailey and Lou Streets, across from the Village Apartments, on Saturday, July 7 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Church members set up games with prizes, made cotton candy, popcorn, snow cones and hot dogs for lunch.
