Sweetwater will host first-place Wylie in its final Dis-trict 5-3A volleyball match at 6:30 p.m. today. But if the Lady Mustangs (3-4 dis-trict, 19-18 overall) can pull off an upset, they have a chance to extend their sea-son beyond today.
Big Spring and Brown-wood, who are both 4-3, are tied for second place in district and face each other this Friday. The winner will claim the No. 2 seed in Dis-trict 5-3A. The loser, how-ever, faces a play-in against Sweetwater for the No. 3 spot if the Lady Mustangs upset Wylie (7-0), the No. 1 seed out of the district.
Mateo Gonzales is the Football Player of the Week for Sweetwater. Gonzales, a 225-pound senior defensive tackle, had a team-high six solo tackles â€” all of them behind the line â€” and assisted on five other tackles for the Mustangs against Snyder this past Friday. He also had one quarterback pressure.
On Monday night, Oct. 17, amidst roaring winds and blowing sand, the Sweetwater High School Marching Band put on a classy performance to earn them straight â€ś1sâ€ť in UIL marching competition in Abilene. â€śWe knew the bad weather was on the way, and it hit just as the band was preparing to perform,â€ť explained band booster photographer Carola Martin. â€śWe braced ourselves, and the band played and marched like it was a walk in the park.â€ť
Early voting for the Texas Constitutional Amendment Election begins on Monday, Oct. 24, 2011, in the Nolan County Clerk's Office, located at 100 E. Third Street, Suite 108 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday until Friday, Nov. 4, 2011. The last day for the County Clerk to receive an application to vote by mail is Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2011. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
For the second year in a row, there will be two back-to-back fundraising events associated with the Round-Up for Rehab in Sweetwater to raise dollars for the West Texas Rehabilitation Center. A Shrimp Peel dinner and auction will be held at the Nolan County Annex on Tuesday evening, Oct. 25, the night before the sale at Sweetwater Auction which will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 26.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 41 calls for service, issued two citations and made seven arrests on Oct. 20, 2011.

SNYDER â€” Keenon Ward was every bit as good as advertised on Friday.
Ward accounted for 411 yards â€” 217 rushing and 194 passing â€” and four touchdowns as Snyder over-whelmed Sweetwater 49-20 in a District 5-3A contest.
Snyder is now 2-1 in district (7-1 overall) and tied with Wylie for first place with two games remaining while Sweetwater fell to 4-5 overall, 1-2 in district.
Despite the loss, the Mustangs can still make the playoffs with a win Friday in their season finale against Brownwoood in Sweetwater. Brownwood (5-3, 1-1) was idle this week.
Highland lost to Ira, 46-0, in its district opener on Friday in a game called at halftime due to the six-man mercy rule, while Roscoe stayed winless this season after losing to first-place Crosbyton 48-6 in a District 7-A contest.

Jay Lomas scored two of Sweetwater Whiteâ€™s three touchdowns with a 1-yard run followed by a 27-yard catch from Kaegan Jeffrey. Jeffrey also threw a 46-yard touchdown pass to James Clift as well as a 2-point pass to Duanta Williams. Angel Caballero and Andrew Davis were defensive standouts for the Ponies.
