Girls lifters second at GC

Sweetwater’s girls power-lifting team placed second overall and had two individual winners Saturday at a meet in Grape Creek.
Sweetwater’s individual winners were Loni Mendez in the 181-pound class and Joslyn Rosas in the 220-pound class. Mendez lifted a total of 760 pounds, while Rosas lifted 730 pounds.

SHS golf teams play in season-opening events

Sweetwater High School’s girls and boys golf teams played in season-opening tournaments this past week-end at San Angelo and Sny-der, respectively.
The girls shot a two-day score of 845 for a sixth-place finish in San Angelo, while the boys placed fifth in Snyder after a two-day total of 690.
For the boys, Ryan Mercer shot 77-79-156 to finish in a tie for third place among medalists. Meanwhile, the team rebounded from an opening 370 on Friday to shoot 320 — the best one-day score of any team in the tournament — on Saturday.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had nine calls for service, served no civil papers and made one arrest on Feb. 7, 2012.

Ranch House Motel honored by Department of Defense

Texas Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), an agency of the Department of Defense, announced that the Ranch House Motel in Sweetwater will be honored with the Patriotic Employer Award in recognition of extraordinary support of its employee who serves in the National Guard and Reserve.

Update: Eight dogs available for adoption

Sweetwater Animal Control currently has eight dogs available for adoption.
One of the adoptable pets is a male Chihuahua from last week. Also available are three female Chihuahuas, one male wire-haired mixed breed dog and one female mixed breed dog. Newly available are two male wired haired, terriers mixes.
According to Sweetwater’s animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.

FFB motor bank now open

First Financial bank's new motor bank is now open to customers as of Monday, Feb. 6, 2012. The new motor bank addition is located on the north side of the existing bank building on the corner of Broadway and Elm Street. There are six drive up lanes, a commercial lane, a night depository and a new state-of-the-art, deposit taking ATM.

Mustangs scare Lions but fall by 9

If Brownwood thought that its last district game at Mustang Gym for at least the next two years would be easy, Sweetwater had them thinking otherwise by game’s end Tuesday.
Unfortunately, close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. As a result, the playoff-bound Lions (5-1) left with a 57-48 win that kept them in contention for a share of the District 5-3A title. But it took clutch free throw shooting at the end for Brownwood to finally hold off Sweetwater (1-6), which twice got within four points until the Lions hit 7-0f-8 from the line in the final 1:07 to seal the win.

S’water teams lose final doubleheader

Brownwood showed again here Tuesday why it is the No. 6-ranked team in Class 3A girls basketball.
Sweetwater scored the first basket on a shot by Candice Hernandez just 16 seconds into the game. But things went downhill quickly from there for the homestanding Lady Mustangs as the Lady Lions came back to beat Sweetwater, 70-29, in the teams’ season finale.
