Several Nolan County ju-nior high basketball teams began their seasons recent-ly. Here are the scores and other information from the teams who sent in results to the Sweetwater Reporter:

Highland squads split DH at Guthrie

Highland came away with a split of its varsity basketball doubleheader at Guthrie on Friday.
Highland’s girls defeat-ed Guthrie, 38-30, to im-prove to 3-1 this season but the Highland boys lost, 56-33, in their season opener.
Sierra Allen scored 12 points and Kara Hughey 10 for the Lady Hornets, who had to rally in the second half after trailing by a point, 17-16, at inter-mission.
Also scoring for High-land were Jessica McCain with six, Madison Mose-ley with four and Beth Richburg, Lora Stewart and Megan Thompson each with two points against Guthrie.

Blackwell, Roscoe girls are defeated

The Blackwell and Roscoe girls both lost early-season basketball games Friday after facing each other just a few days earlier.
Roscoe lost its game to Cross Plains, 52-22, at Roscoe after being held to five points in the first half. The Plowgirls (1-2) were led in scoring by Natalie Anthony with six points while Carolina Perez and Mirian Solis had five, Sara Kingston three, Stina Tomlin two and Jacinda Morales one.

Grand Jury indicts three

Three separate indictments were true-billed for Jose Santiago Quintana this past week by a Nolan County Grand Jury.
One indictment included two counts of aggravated sexual assault, a first degree felony, one count of indecency with a child by contact, a second degree felony and one count of indecency with a child by exposure, a third degree felony. These counts stemmed from incidences in 1994. Bond for this indictment was set at $25,000.

The Flight of the Seabee

We all know the feeling of an emotional flight hangover. The end of a pilot’s indulgence week! The shortest, fastest week of the year is the EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. And 51 of the longest, slowest weeks need to pass before we can do it again. We all slip away by plane, car, trailer or motorcycle…we were suitably subdued, packed and waiting for our trip back to the ordinary.

SHS named AVID certified school

Sweetwater High School has recently been notified that it has become a certified AVID school after two years of implementation. To be a certified AVID school the school must meet criteria in 11 essential areas, such as tutoring, rigorous courses, site team participation and strategies in writing, reading, inquiry and collaboration. The Sweetwater High School program has grown from 30 students in the ninth and tenth grades to 65 students this year in grades 9-12.

Adopt a Mustang returns

Mustang Moms are reviving their "Adopt-A-Mustang" program for the varsity basketball boys and girls. The program is designed to let students from kindergarten through sixth grade "adopt" a high school athlete. Students have the chance to adopt a Mustang varsity basketball player (girl or boy) on Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011 at the home game for both teams. Registration is still $25, and students will get a t-shirt and button with their adoptees name and picture. And because the varsity players are in such high demand, students can adopt the same Mustang if they want.

Greetings from the Avondale Baptist Church family! Our regular Sunday schedule is: coffee fellowship at 9:20 a.m., Bible study at 9:45 a.m., worship services at 10:50 a.m. and 6 p.m., choir practice at 7 p.m. On Wednesday evening we have On-Mission groups for all ages at 7 p.m. We will have "High Attendance Day" for Sunday school on Sunday, Nov. 27. Nolan County volunteer fire departments receive new radios

A meeting of fire chiefs, representing the volunteer fire departments in Nolan County, was hosted at the Nolan County Sheriff’s Office this past Tuesday evening. Sheriff David Warren presented the five volunteer fire departments with a total of 33 new Kenwood brand portable hand-held radios with accessories. Sheriff Warren has administered the grant funds, received by Nolan County, from the State Homeland Security Program (SHSP) grant for the past several years. “These new portable radios represent a major advancement in technology for the area volunteer fire responders.” said Sheriff Warren.
