City plans for future

The standing room only crowd at the Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011, city commission meeting brought several Tenaska opposers in regards to an agenda item in which city commissioners were to consider potential water supply agreements. The agenda item stated that city commission was to consider potential water supply agreements.
After a closed Executive Session meeting ended and the commissioners came back into regular session, citizens were informed of the decision that there would be "no action at this time."

Childers takes the stand

The fifth day of the trial against Aubrey Phillip Childers continued on Monday, November 14, 2011. Mr. Childers is on trial from an allegation and indictment of a male-on-male sexual assault that occurred on or around August 15, 2010 around the southwest part of Sweetwater.
The nine-woman, three-man jury heard a slew of testimony from the defense throughout the entire day, including testimony from Mr. Childers himself, leading up to the time when the defense rested their case around 4:20 p.m.

Arthur J. Smith, 80, of Stephenville, passed away Monday, Nov. 14, 2011, in Stephenville.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2011, at the Sweetwater Cemetery in Sweetwater, Texas. Arrangements are under the direction of Stephenville Funeral Home.

RPMH Diabetic Outreach Program to offer blood sugar checks

November is American Diabetes Month, and to acknowledge this Alice Velez from the Diabetic Outreach Program at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital will be at the health department on Thursday, Nov. 17, from 8 a.m. until noon to check blood glucose and answer any questions you may have regarding diabetes. Pamphlets and materials will be available.
The health department will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 24 and Friday, Nov. 25 for the Thanksgiving holidays. Immunization clinic is cancelled for Wednesday, Nov. 23. Regular hours for immunizations will resume on Wednesday, Nov. 30.

SW is hosting three playoffs

Sweetwater will host three high school playoff games this weekend at Mustang Bowl.
Muleshoe (9-1) and Godley (10-1) will meet in a Class 2A, Division I area matchup at 7:3o p.m. Friday. The winner will advance to the regional round to face either Merkel or Childress the following week.

Highland girls get 1st victory

The Highland girls basketball team got its first win of the 2011-12 season this past Friday by easily defeating Eula, 59-23. The Lady Hornets (1-1) were led by Sierra Allen’s 27 points. Beth Richburg (19 points) was also in double figures, while Kara Hughey scored nine points and Megan Thompson had four. Highland led 17-2, 31-6 and 42-12 at the breaks. But Highland’s JV girls lost to Eula, 39-10, with Schyler Kimbrell scoring six points and Mia Herrera four.
