After months of intense preparation for this seasonâs FLL robotics competition challenge dubbed âFood Factor,â the Bacteria Ninjas from Sweetwater Middle School took their plastic blocks and brains to the table to compete at the fourth annual North Texas FIRST LEGOÂŽ League (FLL) Regional Championship Robotics Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012. Coached by Shana Hrbacek, Bacteria Ninja members were Anna Espinoza, Christa Martin, Abby Garcia, Bella Pena and Abby Lynch. The Bacteria Ninjas were sponsored by Ludlum Measurements in Sweetwater.
ABILENE â The annual Texas Farm, Ranch, Wildlife Expo is set for Feb. 21-22 on the grounds of the Taylor County Expo Center, located at 1700 State Highway 36 in Abilene. Show hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Feb. 21 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 22.
The event is sponsored by the Texas AgriLife Extension Service and the Abilene Chamber of Commerce.
AARP and IRS will sponsor as a public service free income tax return preparation, including e-file at four locations this year.

Sweetwater lost to Brownwood in season-ending District 5-3A girls basketball action here Tuesday to finish 1-7 in district play and 15-18 overall. Sweetwaterâs girls power-lifting team placed second overall and had two individual winners Saturday at a meet in Grape Creek.
Sweetwaterâs individual winners were Loni Mendez in the 181-pound class and Joslyn Rosas in the 220-pound class. Mendez lifted a total of 760 pounds, while Rosas lifted 730 pounds.
Sweetwater High Schoolâs girls and boys golf teams played in season-opening tournaments this past week-end at San Angelo and Sny-der, respectively.
The girls shot a two-day score of 845 for a sixth-place finish in San Angelo, while the boys placed fifth in Snyder after a two-day total of 690.
For the boys, Ryan Mercer shot 77-79-156 to finish in a tie for third place among medalists. Meanwhile, the team rebounded from an opening 370 on Friday to shoot 320 â the best one-day score of any team in the tournament â on Saturday.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 39 calls for service, issued no citations and made two arrests on Feb. 7, 2012.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had nine calls for service, served no civil papers and made one arrest on Feb. 7, 2012.

Texas Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), an agency of the Department of Defense, announced that the Ranch House Motel in Sweetwater will be honored with the Patriotic Employer Award in recognition of extraordinary support of its employee who serves in the National Guard and Reserve.
Sweetwater Animal Control currently has eight dogs available for adoption.
One of the adoptable pets is a male Chihuahua from last week. Also available are three female Chihuahuas, one male wire-haired mixed breed dog and one female mixed breed dog. Newly available are two male wired haired, terriers mixes.
According to Sweetwaterâs animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
