National Nurses Week celebrated at RPMH

Whether they wrap a bandage around a wound or calm us before surgery, nurses provide more than care when we are ill—they provide comfort. In recognition of the compassionate service nurses provide to our community, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) is joining the American Nursing Association in commemorating National Nurses Week.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 47 calls for service, issued three citations and made no arrests on May 4, 2011.

The SPD received 27, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Criminal mischief — 1100 block of Campbell.
• Theft — 2700 block of W. Broadway.
• Burglary of a vehicle — 1600 block of San Carlos.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had seven calls for service, served two civil papers and made two arrests on May 4, 2011.

Arrested by DPS:
• Raven Javon Weaver, 28, of Oklahoma City, Okla. — Possession of marijuana.

Vause avoids tag for HSU

Sweetwater’s Jason Vause (left), a freshman on the Hardin-Simmons University baseball team, somehow managed to avoid the tag on this play last Saturday at Abilene’s Hunter Field and score the go-ahead run for the Cowboys in an 8-6 win that evened their best-of-three playoff series with Mississippi College. HSU then came back to win Game 3, 12-11 in 14 innings, and reach the championship round of the American Southwest Conference tournament that begins today at Texas-Dallas in Richardson. HSU is one of four teams in the tournament.

Pioneer Museum hosts Chamber Coffee

Many attended a special Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce coffee event honoring volunteers at the Pioneer Museum on Wednesday. Terry Locklar made homemade breakfast burritos cooked on the spot outside of the museum.

Mavis Claire Whitteker

Mavis Whitteker, of Sweetwater, Texas passed away on May 4, 2011, at the age of 99. She exemplified true Christianity in every way. Those who were privileged to have known her loved her. She spent her life in tireless service to her family and others. Mavis was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for 45 years, fulfilling many roles and responsibilities. The admonition of Jesus Christ, her Lord and Savior, to “Come Follow Me” was the guiding light for her life.

Imogene Thomas Carter

Memorial services for Imogene Thomas Carter, 92, of Sweetwater, will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 6, 2011, at First Presbyterian Church in Sweetwater with Rev. Earl Stewart officiating. Interment will be at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Carter died April 18, 2011, at her home.
She was born Nov.15, 1918, in Fancy Farm, Ken. She married Dan W. Carter in December of 1945 in Mississippi. Imogene moved to Sweetwater in February of 2011 from California. She and her family had live in El Paso and Las Vegas in the past. She was a homemaker.
