Gilbert wins prize package

Laura Gilbert’s name was drawn as the winner of the Texas Rangers Prize Package from Meek Blood Center. The prize package included four tickets to see the Rangers play the L.A. Angels on Aug. 26, a one night hotel stay and a $50 debit card. Laura is a mail carrier and a two gallon donor with  Meek Blood Center.

USDA reminds producers of sales closing date

Nolan County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director Dennis Cumbie, urges producers who want to purchase coverage through the Noninsurable Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP) to do so before the sales closing date of Sept. 1, 2011.
NAP provides financial assistance to producers of noninsurable crops when low yields, loss of inventory or prevented planting occur due to normal disasters.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 50 calls for service, issued three citations and made no arrests on Aug. 24, 2011.

The SPD received 19, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Theft — 1000 block of View.
• Criminal trespass — 600 block of Pecan.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had four calls for service, served five civil papers and made no arrests on Aug. 24, 2011.

Calls for service:
• Court Bailiff — County Court at Law.
• Stranded motorist — I-20 east bound.
• Illegal dumping — CR 105.

Roscoe and Blackwell start out with tough road contests

The Roscoe Plowboys and Blackwell Hornets are both entering this season with several young players who have little or no varsity experience, but neither team will be getting a break in their opener.
Roscoe, which has just four seniors on its 31-player roster, travels to Albany tonight for its opener that will kick off at 7:30 p.m.

City reads ordinance on tax rate

The City Commission met for a brief meeting on Tuesday morning, Aug. 23, 2011 at City Hall.
The only action item on the agenda was for the first reading of an Ordinance fixing and levying the rate of 48 cents per $100 valuation, which was approved to be adopted. Two public hearings were held on the matter before today's action, and it was noted that the tax rate has seen no change in the past six years.
The final reading will now take place at the next city meeting slated for Tuesday morning, Sept. 13.

Mustang Moms hosting Tailgate Party

Mustang Moms will be holding a Tailgate Party before the football game against Vernon on Friday, Aug. 26, from 5:30-6:20 p.m. During this time, Little Mustangs will be able to pick up their Adopt-a-Mustang t-shirt and picture button. Juice pouches, chips and snacks will be handed out along with t-shirts and buttons. Mustang Moms are asking that the Little Mustangs show up at the track parking lot promptly at 5:30 p.m. as there are 44 t-shirts and buttons to be passed out.

KTAB launches new local 4 p.m. program

On Monday, Sept. 12, afternoon television in the Big Country will get a lot more local when KTAB launches KTAB 4u. Hosted by KTAB’s Alex Hayes, KTAB 4u is a 30-minute locally produced lifestyle program that will focus on women’s issues.
“I can’t tell you how many times local businesses have asked to be interviewed. KTAB 4 will give us an opportunity to interview local businesses which in turn will give them the chance to communicate to the local consumers in a way that has not been done before in the Big Country,” said KTAB General Manager Eric Thomas.

Nell Merwyn Baugh Kendrick passed from this life on Aug. 16, 2011, to join her husband Alvin Kendrick, parents Jim and Lucy Baugh, and brothers Bob and Sam Baugh.
She is survived by daughters, Karen Sorrells, Ellen Stevenson and Mona Kendrick; grandchildren, Missy Horvath, J.J. Stevenson and Steve Stevenson; six great-grandchildren; and six nieces and nephews.
