Petticoats on the Prairie this weekend

Petticoats on the Prairie is again coming to West Texas. "Petticoats on the Prairie is a vintage article and antique showcase that West Texas people can come to for the weekend and not have to travel across the state,” explained free-lance designer Cecilia Scott, who with several other women who call themselves the Rodeo Queens, are behind the event. Scott, a Colorado City native who came back to West Texas to live in the family home made from an old church, believes wide open rural spaces foster a greater percentage of creativity than cities.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 13 calls for service, issued no citations and made no arrests on Oct. 18, 2011.

The SPD received 1, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Family violence assault — 800 block of Circle Drive.
• Theft — 1600 block of E. 15th.
• Theft of prescription medication — 1300 block of E. Broadway.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had six calls for service, served one civil paper and made one arrest on Oct. 18, 2011.

Arrested by NCSO:
• Dennis Dewayne Dison, 41, of Sweetwater — Gregg County warrant/violation of probation.

‘Stangs try to tame Tigers

The Sweetwater football team completed Step 1 on its way to becoming a play-off contender by defeating a winless Big Spring team 28-6 this past Friday at Mustang Bowl.
Now comes the hard part — winning at least one of its final two games against two of the most respected pro-grams in the state, begin-ning with Friday’s District 5-3A game at Snyder (6-1, 1-0), which is riding a six-game winning streak.

Grand Jury indicts 10

Aubrey Phillip Childers was re-indicted on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011, by the Nolan County Grand Jury. Childers was charged with sexual assault, a second degree felony, enhanced to a first degree felony with one prior conviction. Court documents state that Childers sexually assaulted the victim, knowing that the victim did not consent and was unconscious or physically unable to resist or unaware that the sexual assault was occurring.

County proclaims Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Local breast cancer survivors and local officials hung a wreath in the lobby of the Nolan County Courthouse on Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011, as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Nolan County. The event was co-sponsored by the Women's Health Awareness Program at the Alliance for Women and Children, Vera West Women's Center in Abilene, West Central Texas Chapter Oncology Nursing, Your Women's Center at Abilene Regional Medical Center and the American Cancer Society.

Kiwanis Club holds pancake supper

The Kiwanis Club of Sweetwater recently hosted their largest annual fundraiser, the Pancake Supper, on Friday night, Oct. 14, 2011. Before the Sweetwater Mustangs took on the Big Spring Steers that night, the Sweetwater High School cafeteria was filled with area residents enjoying a late-day breakfast. The pancake supper has always been a success in the past due in part to the incredible collaborative efforts between Kiwanis members, local sponsors and even support from outside of the city.

FBI kidnapping classification for Hailey Dunn may change

Recently, one witness said she was certain she saw Hailey Dunn, missing Colorado City teen, on Dec. 27. Colorado City police say they don't believe the accounts are correct.
Chief Roy Owens and investigators from the department go over tips from the public, but he said not all are correct. Owens said emotions can cloud people's memories, so it's up to investigators to find the truth.

Lady Stangs stun B’wood, still have shot at playoffs

The Sweetwater volleyball team still may be a longshot to make the state playoffs.
But a Brownwood team on the verge of clinching a postseason berth for the eighth consecutive year discovered Tuesday that the Lady Mustangs were not about to roll over for them.
Instead, Sweetwater ral-lied after a slow start to take a convincing 3-1 win at Mustang Gym and keep its playoff chances alive. After losing 25-20 in Game 1, the Lady Mustangs swept past the Lady Lions by scores of 25-18, 25-21 and 25-13.
