USG announces retirement

USG announced the retirement of John Campbell, Quality Technician, after 30 years of dedicated service. John selected a laptop computer as his retirement gift. The employees of the Sweetwater Plant would like to thank John for his years of dedicated service, his personal commitment to safety and for his impact on the outstanding achievements of the plant over the years. Charles Randall Diggs, 85, passed away May 8, 2011, at his home after an extended illness. Funeral will be Thursday, May 12, 2011 at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Earl Stewart officiating. Interment will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.

SHS graduate competes to be ‘The Voice’

If you've tuned in to the recently added Tuesday night show "The Voice" on NBC, you may have seen a local face grace your TV screen.
Sweetwater High School alum Tje (pronounced TYE) Alldrege auditioned for the singing show on the series premiere on April 26. He fared well enough to advance to the second round of competition and landed a spot on the eight member team coached by hip hop mogul Cee Lo Green, thus living out one of his dreams to work with the superstar.

National Hospital Week puts spotlight on people

A hospital is more than a place where people go to heal, it is a part of the community that fosters health and represents hope. From providing treatment and comfort to the sick, to welcoming new life into the world, hospitals are central to a healthy and optimistic community. That’s the message organizers are touting with the 2011 National Hospital Week theme, “Champions of Care”.
The event theme, announced this week, is the centerpiece of a promotional campaign aimed at uniting health care facilities across the country during the May 8-14 celebration.

ACRE meetings set for May

SAN ANGELO – The Texas AgriLife Extension Service will conduct three ACRE (Average Crop Revenue Election) workshops in Colorado City, Roscoe and Eden during May.
Workshop particulars are:
– May 11, 8:30 a.m. City National Bank’s Thompson Room located in Colorado City; $5 registration fee due on arrival. Those planning to attend should RSVP by May 10 by calling 325-728-3111.
– May 11, 1 p.m., Roscoe Community Center.
– May 17, 6:30 p.m. Eden Multi-Purpose Center.
The Roscoe and Eden meetings will each have a $10 registration fee due upon arrival.    

Local first grader tests for black belt

On Dec. 11, 2010 Eric Thomas Martinez Jr. tested for his recommend black belt. He is under the instruction of his grandpa, Lonnie Mendez. of Team Chip TKD Sweetwater. Eric has been training for four years, having started at the age of 2. He is a very active member of Team Chip; he is in the Weapons Club, Black Belt Club, Tournament Team and Demo Team. He has competed in over a dozen tournaments competing against people from all over the U.S., Korea and Mexico.

SWOWT perform at Trinity Baptist

About 40 ladies from the Lubbock area traveled for the concert at Trinity Baptist in Sweetwater last Sunday evening. Nolan County friends and family filled the sanctuary for the concert. Shown are four Nolan County residents in the Singing Women of West Texas choir including Judy Arthur, Charlene Killgore, Nancy Althof and Judy Suggs.
