Lady Stangs still over .500 after victory at Seminole

The Sweetwater volleyball team is back over .500 for the 2011 season after a 3-1 victory at Seminole on Tuesday after losing in four games to Midland Lee to begin the dual match.
Kendra Crosson had 15 kills, Kelsi Crosson seven, Shelby Cason and Alicia Finn four and Larissa Locklar and Taylor McPherson three against Seminole. Suede Shirley had 15 assists and Finn 10 for Sweetwater (5-4). Against Midland Lee, Cason had eight kills while Kendra Crosson had seven kills, Kathleen Campbell five and Kelsi Crosson and Finn three apiece.

Sweetwater’s two sub-varsity football teams were both very competitive in their first scrimmages of the year at Lubbock Cooper, with the JV White team outscoring Cooper three touchdowns to two while Sweetwater’s JV Red fought to a 3-3 standoff.
Mark McCann (21- and 32-yard runs) and Kris Duran (35-yard run) scored for Sweetwater Red. Scoring for Sweetwater White were Jay Lomas (6-yard run), Xavier Jones (4-yard run) and Duante Williams (19-yard pass from Kaegan Jeffrey).

JV spikers win tourney

The Sweetwater junior varsity volleyball team won the recent Albany tournament held Aug. 12 and off to an outstanding 7-1 start.
At the Albany tournament, Sweetwater had wins over Archer City 25-12, 25-15; Breckenridge 25-10, 25-6; Bronte 25-18, 25-20; and Bangs 25-20, 25-22. It also beat Grape Creek 25-15, 25-16, lost to Midland Lee 12-25, 6-25 and beat Seminole 25-17, 25-12.

Grand Jury indicts 11

A Nolan County Grand Jury indicted 11 people on Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2011. Three of those indictments were sealed. The following cases were true-billed:
• Arthur Ray Johns was indicted for continuous family violence, a third degree felony. Court documents state that Johns recklessly caused bodily injury to a family member by pulling her hair on July 24, 2011 and hit the same family member on May 17, 2011. His bond was set at $10,000.

Teams to play for a cause

The public is invited to attend when Sweetwater and San Angelo Lake View participate in a football scrimmage on Friday, Aug. 19 at Mustang Bowl. The JV Red and White teams will play at 6 p.m. and the varsity teams take the field at 7:30 p.m. Admission to the scrimmage will be $1 as part of "Our Day To Shine," with all proceeds being donated to the Texas High School Coaches Association's Benevolence Fund.

SISD excited about changes

While the sweltering summer winds down, the Sweetwater Independent School District (SISD) is already preparing for the "New Course - New Direction" of the new school year which is just days away.
Two huge changes have been made that will drastically impact the community: the closing of the HOBBS alternative school and the reorganization of the two elementary schools.

Briggs donates Civil War print

Michael Briggs of Sweetwater generously donated a limited edition print titled “The Texas Brigade” to the County-City Library. It is dedicated to those who gave their lives for their state and their nation. Briggs’ goal is to promote history and had a display of his Civil War collection at the library several years ago. Billy Joe Jay of Sweetwater Frame and Gallery donated the glass for the frame.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 42 calls for service, issued 10 citations and made three arrests on Aug. 15, 2011.

The SPD received 17, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Assault — 500 block of Wall.

Arrested by SPD
• Michael Austerman, 27 — Warrant.
• Amber Austerman, 26 — Warrant.
• Male juvenile, 12 — Order of immediate custody.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 10 calls for service, served four civil papers and made one arrest on Aug. 15, 2011.

Sibyl Louise Walding

Sibyl Louise Walding, 93, passed away, Sunday, Aug. 14, 2011, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in Sweetwater. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at Kiker-Seale Chapel. Dr. Jerry Shields will be officiating services.

Fire burns 500 acres

Several fire departments are currently responding to the M&M Ranch fire near Maryneal. According to Sweetwater fire Chief Grant Madden, a total of 500 acres have already burned as firefighters continue to battle the blaze. The cause of the fire is of a "suspicious" nature, according to Madden.
