Coin collectors host local event

Currently on a global tour, the International Coin Collectors Association (ICCA) made a stop in Sweetwater at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel, located at 300 SE Georgia Ave. Buyers will be in town until Saturday, July 30. The show hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. The ICCA has been purchasing coins, paper currency, gold and silver on behalf of their global network of collectors, dealers and refineries. This special event is free and open to the public. Gas prices increase

The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Texas is $3.62, a penny more than the average last week, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch.
The national average is $3.71. The statewide average price is nine cents less than the national average. Texans will find the least expensive average price for gasoline in the state is in El Paso at $3.52.  Dallas and Ft. Worth are reporting the most expensive averages in the state at $3.66 for a gallon of regular unleaded. The current gas price in Sweetwater is $3.65.

FSA county committee nomination deadline is Aug. 1

Nolan County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director Dennis Cumbie, reminds farmers, ranchers and landowners to nominate farmer and rancher candidates to serve on their local FSA county committee by the Monday, Aug. 1, 2011 deadline.
Elected county committee members serve a three-year term and are responsible for making decisions on FSA disaster, conservation, commodity, and price support programs, as well as other important federal farm program issues.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 58 calls for service, issued six citations and made no arrests on July 27, 2011.

The SPD received 20, 911 calls.

• Criminal mischief — 700 block of Neff.
The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had nine calls for service, served 11 civil papers and made no arrests on July 27, 2011.

• Vehicle accident — Highway 70 North.
• Suspicious vehicle — CR 105.

SISD announces time changes

Sweetwater Independent School District has made changes to campus starting and ending times for the coming school year.
• J.P. Cowen Early Childhood Center will begin at 8 a.m. and end at 2:30 p.m.
• Southeast Elementary School, grades Kindergarten and first grade, will begin at 8 a.m. and end at 3:15 p.m.
• East Ridge Elementary School for second and third grade begins at 8:15 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m.
• Sweetwater Intermediate School, for fourth and fifth grade, begins at 8:05 a.m. and ends at 3:40 p.m.

Blood donors eligible for Rangers prize package

Meek Blood Center hopes that the chance to win a Texas Rangers prize package will increase donor turnout at the blood drives on Thursday, Aug. 4, in Sweetwater. One bloodmobile will be parked at the Nolan County Courthouse and the other will be parked at the Lions Club building on Lamar Street from noon until 6 p.m. Historically, blood collections are lowest in August though blood usage remains steady.

Armstrong named SMS Teacher of the Year

Irene Armstrong was named 2010-2011 Teacher of the Year at Sweetwater Middle School where she is a seventh grade Texas History and SEEK (gifted and talented) teacher. She has taught at Sweetwater ISD for the past 13 years, teaching for a total of 16 years.
Armstrong attended Amarillo Junior College and West Texas A&M University, earning a Bachelor's degree.

Purchases discussed by RPMH board

The Nolan County Hospital District Board of Directors met for its regular meeting on Tuesday evening, July 26, 2011 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH).
With the new fiscal year approaching, the board reviewed the 2012 Capital Budget, being presented a handout which is broken down by department, in which the purchases are broken down by need as well as price.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 11 calls for service, served two civil papers and made three arrests on July 26, 2011.

• Loraine Danielle Brown, 19, of Sweetwater — Indictment/prohibited substance in a correctional facility-alcohol/drug/phone/tobacco.
• Mark Anthony Zavala, 27, of Wilson — Warrant/motion to revoke probation.

City tackles redistricting

The Sweetwater City Commission met for its second regular meeting of the month on Tuesday morning, July 26, 2011 at the City Hall. The two main topics of the brief meeting were on the budget for the upcoming fiscal year and the continued process of redistricting.
Sweetwater City Manager Eddie Brown presented the review of the proposed budget for 2011-2012. Brown highlighted several facets of the budget, including the recommended 3.3% cost of living raise for city employees.
