The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 142 calls for service, issued nine citations and made seven arrests from July 15-17, 2011.

The SPD received 81, 911 calls.

• 1500 block of Walnut.

Calls for service:
• Burglary of a vehicle — 1600 block of Grand.
• Family violence assault — 600 block of Jack Lambert.
• Impede breath — 17th Street.
• Theft — 1000 block of Oak Street.
• Theft — 900 block of Lamar.
• Theft — 200 block of E. Oklahoma.
• Theft — 700 block of E. Avenue B.

Senior League all-star championship action

Sweetwater played for the title Saturday at a Senior League (ages 15-16) Texas West 2 sectional tournament held in Garland, but lost the game to Waco Southern 5-1. Senior Leaguers fall to Waco Southern in finals

GARLAND — After giving up 15 runs in a lopsided loss to Waco Southern two days earlier, Sweetwater’s Senior League (ages 15-16) all-stars were much more competitive when the teams met again Saturday in the Texas West Section 2 championship game.
However, it still wasn’t enough as Waco Southern pulled away late to claim the title with a 5-1 victory at South Garland’s Little League complex and ad-vance to the state tourna-ment in Fort Worth.

10-11 year-olds lose to FW on 8th-inning slam

WACO — After three straight losses to Fort Worth University — two of them in last year’s 9-10 year-old sectional tournament and the other this year — the players on Sweetwater’s 10-11 year-old Little League team faced their nemesis again in a losers bracket final Saturday at the Texas West Section 2 tournament in Waco.
This time, the teams en-gaged in a thrilling contest that saw the teams locked in a 3-3 tie at the end of the regulation six innings.

Organizers looking to hold benefit concert for injured Snyder officer

Organizers are developing plans for a weekend concert to benefit a Snyder Police Officer who was shot in the head last week.
Organizer Jamie Crowley says she's booked the Snyder Coliseum for the weekend of August 19-21 in an effort to raise money for Darrell Campbell. Campbell has a long road to recovery ahead of him. He remains in critical condition.
Crowley is now trying to spark interest and raise funds on the social media website Facebook.

NCBR awards four scholarships

The Nolan County Board of Realtors was very excited at the number of applicants who applied for their $500 college scholarship. This scholarship was made available to all of the graduating high school seniors in Nolan County, planning to further their education. The NCBR Scholarship Committee was also very impressed with the number of applicants that were qualified to receive this award. It was a very difficult job for the selection committee.

Plea entered

One person entered a plea last week to Judge Glen Harrison during 32nd Judicial District Court proceedings.
John Cole Johnson pled true to a motion to adjudicate. Johnson was originally put on community supervision on June 21, 2010 for burglary of a habitation, a second degree felony. The offense occurred on May 19, 2010.

Hazel Joy Brown, age 89, of Brownwood, Texas (formerly of Sweetwater, Texas) passed away on Saturday, July 16, 2011 at Songbird Lodge Nursing Home in Brownwood. 
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Keith Clifton officiating. Burial will follow at Garden of Memories.  Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

Mary J. Knox, age 65, of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away on Sunday, July 17, 2011 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital. 
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at First Baptist Church with Rev. Phillip Thomas officiating. Burial will be at Enoch Cemetery in Gilmer, Texas. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

GARLAND - Smarting from a onesided semifinal loss to Waco Southern a night earlier, Sweetwater’s Senior League (15-16 year-old) all-stars rebounded Friday with an 8-3 win over Dallas Wylie to reach Saturday’s Texas West Section 2 championship game at the South Garland Little League field.
