A series of awards were presented during the Nolan County Commissioners' Court meeting on Monday morning, July 11, 2011 at the Nolan County Courthouse.
Eight individuals were honored with Nolan County service awards for up to 15 years of service with the county. Those honored with five years of service were John Womble as Precinct #4 Equipment Operator and Kevin Buchanan and James Villanueva as Sheriff's Department Patrol Deputies.
The Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital Diabetes Outreach Program sponsored a free screening on Wednesday, July 13, at the Nolan County Courthouse, giving diabetic and cholesterol screenings and checking blood pressure. At left, Patti Neill has her blood pressure checked by Helena Beltran.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 72 calls for service, issued three citations and made three arrests on July 12, 2011.
The SPD received 32, 911 calls.

Jacob Gordon Baker-Vanpelt, infant son of John Chase Vanpelt and Collene Anne Baker, passed away on July 14, 2011 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 17, 2011, at Longworth Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
TRENT â€” Vivian Iona Simpson, 89, of Trent, passed away on July 13, 2011, in Merkel, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 16, at the First United Methodist Church in Trent with Rev. Ronnie Freeman and Rev. Rex Mauldin officiating. Interment will follow in the Sweetwater Cemetery directed by McCoy Funeral Home.
There will be a family visitation on Friday, July 15, from 6-8 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home, located at 401 E. Third Street in Sweetwater, Texas.
Arnulfo (Shooky) Gutierrez, age 56, of Sweetwater, Texas passed away on Thursday, July 14, 2011, at Sweetwater Healthcare Center.Â
A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 15, 2011, at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel recited by Pauline Gauna and Connie Palacios.Â
Holy Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 16, 2011, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Rev. Michael Rodriguez officiating.Â Burial will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery.Â Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.Â

Bill and Lucille met in the 1940s when Lucille was employed in Ft. Worth as an airplane riveter and Bill was in the process of being deployed to England with the US Air Force, where he served as a gunner on a B-17. They were married Nov. 20, 1945 and their marriage continued for 65 years until their deaths this week, 26 hours apart.
According to media partners at bigcountryhomepage.com on Tuesday evening, Pastor Steven PeĂ±a with the First Assembly of God, called together a prayer vigil in support of Cpl. Darrell Campbell who is fighting for his life after a shooting incident in Snyder.
Lee Burchfield works in town and says she's spoken with Campbell when he comes into her store and says she considers him a good friend.

Monday, July 11, was Free Slurpee Day at 7-Eleven. All day, customers nationwide were able to get unlimited Slurpees in special seven-point-11-ounce cups. The promotion has been held every year since 2002 in honor of 7-Eleven's unofficial birthday. "USA Today" reports the company gave away four-and-a-half-million tiny cups of its signature icy drink on July 11, last year.
