KTAB launches new local 4 p.m. program β€” KTAB 4u

On Monday, Sept. 12, afternoon television in the Big Country will get a lot more local when KTAB launches KTAB 4u. Hosted by KTAB’s Alex Hayes, KTAB 4u is a 30-minute locally produced lifestyle program that will focus on women’s issues.
β€œI can’t tell you how many times local businesses have asked to be interviewed. KTAB 4 will give us an opportunity to interview local businesses which in turn will give them the chance to communicate to the local consumers in a way that has not been done before in the Big Country,” said KTAB General Manager Eric Thomas.

William D. "Bill" Swartz

Graveside services for William D. "Bill" Swartz, 71, of Sweetwater, will be held Friday, Sept. 23, 2011, at 10 a.m. in Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene, Texas with Military Graveside Rites performed by the U.S. Army Military Honor Guard from Fort Hood, Texas with Chaplin Eddie Rivera officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Swartz died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.

ROTAN β€” Charles Thornton, 70, died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, at Rolling Plains Hospital in Sweetwater.Β Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at the Church of Christ in Rotan.Β Burial will follow at Belvieu Cemetery under the direction of Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home.Β Visitation will be from 5-6 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.

Funeral services for Sherion Mae Carter, 55, of Trent, will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 12, 2011, at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Pastor Eric von Atzigen officiating.
Carter died Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011, in Abilene.
She was born Dec. 21, 1955, in Dallas County. She married James Michael Carter on May 10, 1980, in Dallas County. Sherion moved to Sweetwater in 1999 and was a homemaker. She graduated from Mesquite High School and was a Baptist.

On Tuesday, September 11, 2001, the United States came under attack in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, DC, and on a flight that would inevitably end in a rural Pennsylvania field.
2,983 people perished that day, with many citing 9/11 as this generation's Pearl Harbor. Since that time, the post-9/11 world has changed drastically in ways no human could have ever fathomed ten years ago.

Robotics program kicks off at TSTC

The local extension of TSTC (Texas State Technical College) West Texas has been getting ready for its debut of the BEST robotics program on its campus which began on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011.
The first of three events for the Big Country BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology) competition was the BEST Kickoff which started Saturday at 1 p.m. Participants were introduced to the game where rules were reviewed and a demonstration was provided before entry kits were distributed to each school.

King hosts coffee

State Representative Susan L. King stopped in Sweetwater on Thursday, Sept. 8, to host the monthly Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce coffee event at the Sweetwater Country Club. King spoke to residents about several issues and gave an update on what is going on in Austin. She is shown above with Chamber Executive Vice President Jacque McCoy.

Marble slab falls from courthouse

On Friday afternoon, Sept. 9, 2011, the Nolan County Courthouse suffered some building damage. One marble slab β€” which covers the entire outside of the courthouse β€” approximately 10 feet by 5 feet, weighing about 2,000 pounds, fell off of the courthouse into the north entrance. Nolan County Sheriff David Warren and a deputy took a square foot chunk, weighed it, and calculated the weight based on the overall dimensions of the slab. The slab cracked a section of sidewalk and part of the planter closest to the doors at the courthouse. There were no injuries.
