Hochheim Prairie Insurance unveils new logo

In celebration of its upcoming 120 year anniversary, Hochheim Prairie Insurance unveiled a new corporate logo during its annual agent conference on Oct. 9 and 10 in San Antonio, Texas. The agent conference was attended by 225 representatives of agencies appointed with Hochheim Prairie Insurance across the state including Russell High from High Agency of Sweetwater.
"The new design proudly embraces the company's unique name, connecting it to 120 years of history and heritage. The addition of the lone star emphasizes the company's exclusively Texas focus," says Dave Talbert, president.

R.J. “Toad” Monroe

Toad was born March 22, 1925 to Lou and Elinor Estes Monroe. He was the fourth child born of 10 from Nolan, Texas. Toad married Sadie Jewel Perry on May 31, 1947 in Nolan, Texas. They moved to Sweetwater in 1951 where they built their home. He passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital at the age of 86. Toad worked in the oil field for over 30 years as a heavy equipment operator and had worked for Britt Construction and T&R Oilfield Construction, where he retired at the age of 70.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 29 calls for service, issued one citation and made two arrests on Nov. 8, 2011.

The SPD received 17, 911 calls.

Accidents:
• 1800 block of Lamar.

Arrested by SPD:
• Leopaldo Vera, 28 — Warrants.
• Braxton Walker, 20 — Driving while license invalid.
The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had nine calls for service, served no civil papers and made one arrest on Nov. 8, 2011.

Arrested by NCSO:
• Julio Juanito Cuellar, 35, of Sweetwater — Warrant/motion to revoke probation.

Plowgirls defeated in opener

The Roscoe girls basket-ball team lost at Winters, 52-37, in its season opener on Tuesday.
Sara Kingston and Caro-lina Perez had seven points to pace Roscoe while Mirian Solis had six, Faith Boren five, Lynnsi Moses four, Jacinda Morales three, Natalie Anthony and Torrey Willman two and Stina Tomlin one. Roscoe’s JV girls won 26-16 as Saman-tha Ortega had 10, Jese Pena eight, Olivia Saddler six and Selena Perez two.

Lady ‘Stangs hold off Lady Hornets, 40-30

Thanks largely to a pair of big scoring runs — one in each half — Sweetwater gave Candice Wyatt a successful debut as head girls basketball coach here on Tuesday, as the Lady Mustangs held on to beat Highland 40-30.
With the game tied 11-11 early in the second quarter, Sweetwater ran off 15 straight points en route to a commanding 26-12 halftime advantage.

Funeral services for R.J. “Toad” Monroe, 86, of Sweetwater, are pending with McCoy Funeral Home.
Monroe died Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.

Julian Lopez Reyes

November 9, 2011

Julian Lopez Reyes, 78, of Colorado City, passed away Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011, at Mitchell County Hospital. Funeral services will be Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011, at Saint Ann’s Catholic Church. Father Michael Udegbunam will officiate. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011 at Kiker-Seale Funeral Home.

UPDATE — Victim takes the stand

4 p.m. Update:
Day three of the Aubrey Phillip Childers case continued on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at the Nolan County Courthouse. Testimony was heard from three local law enforcement officers who were involved in the case, and the jury saw the video interview of Mr. Childers with Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) Detective Sam Cunningham.

The second day of the Aubrey Phillip Childers case continued on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at the Nolan County Courthouse with 32nd Judicial District Court Judge Glen Harrison presiding.
