Employers can benefit from hiring veterans

The observance of Veteran's Day ushered in joyful celebrations, but with the pomp and circumstance gone, veterans once again see a harsh reality.
Though the national average of unemployment still lingers around 9%, the rate for veterans currently stands higher at 12.1%. The unemployment number is even raised for younger veterans, who are returning from their service in Iraq and Afghanistan, at an astounding 27% for 18 to 24 year olds — almost one in four.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 136 calls for service, issued eight citations and made nine arrests from Nov. 18-20, 2011.

The SPD received 78, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Duty on striking an unattended vehicle — 700 block of SW Georgia.
• Unauthorized use of a vehicle — 300 block of W. Alabama.
• Theft of license plate — 1600 block of Sam Houston.
• Theft of license plate — 800 block of E. Avenue B.
• Theft — 1000 block of E. Broadway.

Arrested by SPD:
• Joshua McCoy, 32 — Warrant.

Stangs win at buzzer

A near-disastrous second quarter failed to sink the Sweetwater boys basketball team here Monday, which used a big third-quarter rally to overcome a 10-point halftime deficit. But the Mustangs saved the best for the very end in defeating Colorado City, 49-47, on Taylor Jones’ buzzer-beating shot at Mustang Gym.

SW girls lose

After losing at Abilene High this past Friday, the Sweetwater girls were back home Monday to continue their three-game gauntlet against Class 5A competition. But the re-sult was no better, as the Lady Mustangs lost to San Angelo Central, 61-48.
Alicia Finn’s 13 points led Sweetwater (3-2), which will host Abilene Cooper today. Suede Shir-ley had nine, Shelby Cason and Candice Hernandez six, Kendra Crosson five, Kinsey Browning four, Hayley Brownlow three and Kathleen Campbell two for the Lady Stangs.

Two playoffs set here Friday

Sweetwater will be hosting a high school football playoff doubleheader at Mustang Bowl this Friday.
Abernathy (10-1) and Holliday (9-2) will start the twinbill with a Class 2A, Division II regional matchup that is set to kick off at 3 p.m. The winner advances to the quarter-finals to face either Cisco or Idalou, who play Friday night at Colorado City.

Flipped Trailer Blocks I-20 Traffic

A traffic accident in western Taylor County closed Interstate 20 for a few minutes this morning.
The driver of a pickup pulling a trailer lost control and flipped over.
The trailer was disconnected and blocked the freeway. There were no serious injuries reported, but the accident slowed traffic until the emergency crews could get the debris removed from the busy highway.
It happened this morning near Trent, just east of the Nolan County line.

Seven enter pleas

Seven guilty pleas were entered to Judge Glen Harrison with District Attorney Ann Reed and Assistant District Attorney Barrett Thomas prosecuting the cases, during 32nd Judicial District Court proceedings on Friday, Nov. 18, 2011.

Screening for diabetes is urged during month of November

Diabetes is one of the leading causes of death in the United States, according to the Center for Disease Control. In recognition of National Diabetes Month this November, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) would like to educate the community on the importance of diabetes screenings and treatment.
“There are 20.8 million Americans living with diabetes,” said Dr. Robert Eaker at RPMH. “Nearly one third of them are unaware they have the disease and we want to lower that number.”

Goodfellows to give three stockings
