Mustangs fall to Steers, 9-5

Sweetwater’s offense had 14 hits against Graham and the pitchers came up with 11 strikeouts in Tuesday’s non-district game at Newman Park, while giving up just five hits. Still, the Steers were able to overcome their lack of production by taking advantage of Sweetwater mistakes as they won, 9-5, with the help of nine walks, two hit batters, four errors and a few timely hits.

Shelton breaks coach’s record at Odessa meet

Jayci Shelton did more than just set a meet record with her time of 45.56 seconds in the 300-meter hurdles Friday at the West Texas Relays in Odessa.
The SHS senior’s winning time eclipsed the old record of 46.54 set in 2004 by her coach. Jessica Withrow was a high school star at Muleshoe when she set the previous Division II meet mark for the 300-meter hurdles, a mark broken Friday by Shelton. Losing the record, Withrow said, was “kind of bittersweet.”

Round-Up an opportunity to give back

Sarah Worrell, Sam Spaulding, Ben Spaulding and Emma Worrell had a booth at this year's Rattlesnake Round-Up. They were asking for donations for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The children gave away toys, water and coupons from Wendy's, Sonic, Taco Bell, Wal-Mart and Whataburger in exchange for a donation. They collected $275.24 for St. Jude.

Rabid cat identified

The rabid cat that was reported out at Lake Sweetwater was described as a light yellowish, cream-colored male tom cat and was found on Bahia Drive in Sweetwater.
As the cat appeared to show signs of rabies and was unvaccinated, a call was made for a Nolan County Sheriff's Deputy. Once the deputy arrived, the cat was shot, bagged and taken in for testing.

Funding for child care assistance announced

On Monday, March 14, 2011, Workforce Solutions of West Central Texas Board, and Child Care Services (CCS) announce the availability of child care assistance to help qualifying families pay their child care expenses so they can work, go to school, or attend a training program. Customers receiving child care assistance must meet federal, state and local guidelines and must be able to answer “yes” to the following statements in order to qualify for child care assistance.

FFB installing new ATM on Hailey Street

Some new technology has found its way to a local community bank.
First Financial Bank in Sweetwater has recently installed a new ATM machine at 1531 Hailey, replacing the old machine that was previously in place. FFB President Kirby Andrews described the new device as the "newest and wisest" ATM.
The current ATM boasts several new features, including various deposit capabilities. It can scan checks, count and dispense cash and print receipts.

Norman D. Jurgens

Norman D. Jurgens, 49, Topeka, passed away Saturday, March 12, 2011.
He was born Aug. 18, 1961 in Minden, NE the son of Donald and Gladys (Thurnau) Jurgens.
Norman married his beloved Sonya Langley on Sept. 6, 1980 in Hildreth, NE. He was an enthusiastic Nebraska Cornhuskers football fan. He also loved hunting, fishing, being outdoors and barbecuing.
Most of his life he spent farming in Nebraska but more recently worked for Heartland Crop Insurance.

Ivan Jay Krejci

Holy Mass of Christian Burial for Ivan Jay Krejci, 50, of Roscoe, will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 18, 2011, at Holy Family Catholic Church with Father Quirino Cornejo officiating. Interment will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
A Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 17, 2011, at McCoy Chapel of Memories, recited by Mark Delaplaine.
Krejci died Monday, March 14, 2011, at his home.

Marcia L. Rogers

Marcia L. Rogers, 62 of Colorado City passed away Sunday, March 13, 2011. Graveside services will be Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Trinity Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Big Spring, TX. Rev. James Williams will be officiating.
Family visitation will be Tuesday, March 15, 2011, from 6-8 p.m. at Dandy’s Diner in Colorado City, TX.

SHS teams to see action today

While most students are enjoying spring break, the Sweetwater High School baseball and softball teams will stay busy this week and both will see action today.
The baseball team entertains Graham at 7 p.m. at Newman Park, while the SHS softball team travels to Lamesa for a noon contest. The Lady Mustangs, who are 7-7 overall, are back at the Jerry Collins Complex on Thursday for their final non-district game against Levelland at 3 p.m. Sweet-water will then travel to Big Spring for its District 5-3A opener at 7 p.m. Friday.

The Sweetwater baseball team will play Monahans at 7 p.m. Friday in Big Spring to decide playoff...
