Colorado City â Mr. James Larry Free, age 67, of Colorado City, passed away, Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011, at Midland Memorial Hospital in Midland, Texas. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011 at Oak Street Baptist Church in Colorado City, Texas. Rev. Jackie Brim will be officiating services. All arrangements are under the care and direction of Kiker-Seale Funeral Home.
Highland has a new head football coach, Jeff Shelton, this year, and he inherits some good talent from former coach Karry Owens, who left Highland after 18 seasons and a 147-56-3 record to become the head coach at Water Valley.
Highland managed just a 2-7 record for Owens in his final year, but was practically starting over with a slew of youngsters after graduating most of the top talent from the 2009 squad that reached the state finals.
Highland holds its annual âBig Blue Previewâ Tuesday, Aug. 23 at 6 p.m. at the football field. All football players and spirit groups will be introduced.
A year ago, the Sweetwater volleyball team opened its season with a straight-set loss against Seminole at home. But on Tuesday, Sweetwater hosted Seminole again and the result took a 180-degree turn.
Leading almost all the way, the Lady Mustangs swept the match by scores of 25-20, 25-18, 25-12.
Except for some struggles at the end of the first game and early in the second, Sweetwater was in control against Seminole while getting strong individual performances from several players.

The Nolan County Commissioners met for its regular meeting on Monday morning, Aug. 8, 2011 at the Nolan County Courthouse to discuss a variety of issues.
The proposed tax rate for the next fiscal year was discussed following recent department hearings from the budget workshops that have been taking place. The proposed tax rate presented was at .423023, equaling an increase of about three cents.
The art display at the County-City Library is the pencil drawings of Terry and Bayli Greer. Bayli is the granddaughter of Terry and Gayle Greer. Terry Greer passed away in August of 2003. He began drawing in 2000 as a hobby and had no formal training. Bayli began drawing after seeing her grandfatherâs work. Shown is Terryâs wife, Gayle Greer, next to some of his work currently on display at the library. The library is open Monday from 1-6 p.m.; Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Funeral services for Dan W. Carter, Sr., 89, of Sweetwater, are pending with McCoy Funeral Home.
Carter died Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011, at Sweetwater Healthcare Center.
