Testimonies continue at Mendez trial

Five testimonies were heard during the second day of the criminal case against Albert Mendez, Jr. on Wednesday, August 3, 2011 in the 32nd Judicial District Court at the Nolan County Courthouse.
A competency hearing was held prior to the jury’s entry to determine if the alleged victim was capable to take the stand for the case, which came about from an alleged incident which took place in the early morning hours on Jan. 17, 2010 at Mendez’s residence at 702 W. New Mexico in Sweetwater. The victim was nine years old at the time.

New pharmacist joins Rolling Plains Memorial team

Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) has named Lynn Staggs as its new pharmacy manager. Staggs, who joined the team in June, is responsible for continuing the hospital’s commitment of providing the best healthcare services in Nolan County.
Staggs, who was previously a pharmacy operations manager at a private company, is an accomplished pharmacist and executive leader who has an excellent history of caring for patients. He is now in charge of daily operations at the hospital’s in-house pharmacy.

Chamber Coffee held at Mustang Bowl

Sweetwater Independent School District hosted this month’s Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce Coffee at the Sweetwater Mustang Bowl concession stand. Many attended the event in preparation for football season. Shown are Debbie Anthony, Roddy Alexander, Christie Galvan and Janis McDowell enjoying conversation and refreshments at the coffee event.

SISD reminds parents about dress code when back-to-school shopping

The Sweetwater Independent School District recently completed a process which included public input, surveys and a committee of students, parents, teachers, principals and administrators to come up with an improved dress code for Sweetwater ISD schools. "We began with a public forum months ago where the students modeled standard attire. Although standard attire did not receive the majority of votes, a definite majority supported change," stated Assistant Superintendent Kathy Smartt. "The committee worked diligently to address the specific concerns of sagging and cleavage.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 45 calls for service, issued one citation and made two arrests on Aug. 2, 2011.

The SPD received 28, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Theft — 400 block of NW Georgia.
• Information only — 700 block of SW Georgia.
• Information only — 200 block of E. Arizona.
• Indecency with child — Sweetwater area.

Arrested by SPD
• Bridget Hart, 40 — Disorderly conduct.
• Realitie Rosales, 19 — Warrants.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 12 calls for service, served no civil papers and made two arrests on Aug. 2, 2011.

Trial begins in aggravated sexual assault of a child

The state’s criminal case against Albert Mendez, Jr. began on Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 2, 2011, in the 32nd Judicial District Court with Judge Glen Harrison presiding. Mendez was previously indicted on charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child, indecency with a child by contact, and indecency with a child by exposure.
Mendez pled not guilty to all of the charges which stemmed from an alleged incident involving Mendez and his step-daughter — who was nine years old at the time, which occurred on Jan. 17, 2010 at Mendez’s residence at 702 W. New Mexico in Sweetwater.

Immunization schedule not just for children

Each year, tens of thousands of people in the United States die from a variety of diseases that are preventable with proper vaccinations. This alarming fact from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) sheds light on the importance of vaccination schedules for children and adults alike.
Thought of only as a childhood practice, keeping up with your immunization schedule as an adult is just as important as it was when you were in grade school. Doing so can not only mean a difference between life and death, but it can potentially reduce medical expenses as well.

Blood donors eligible for Rangers prize package

Meek Blood Center hopes that the chance to win a Texas Rangers prize package will increase donor turnout at the blood drives on Thursday, Aug. 4, in Sweetwater. One bloodmobile will be parked at the Nolan County Courthouse and the other will be parked at the Lions Club building on Lamar Street from noon until 6 p.m. Historically, blood collections are lowest in August though blood usage remains steady.

Texas Farm Bureau aids volunteer fire departments

As fires have ripped through more than 2.5 million acres, Texas Farm Bureau (TFB) has committed to match county Farm Bureau donations to aid volunteer fire departments that have protected thousands of homes, livestock and families.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 41 calls for service, issued six citations and made no arrests on Aug. 1, 2011.

The SPD received 16, 911 calls.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had eight calls for service, served 10 civil papers and made five arrests on Aug. 1, 2011.

Arrested by NCSO:
• James William Bushong, 26, of Colorado City — Warrant/surety withdrawal.
• Robert Reed, Jr., 32, of Abilene — Warrant/motion to revoke probation.
• Jerri Sue Goolsby, 41, of Snyder — Judgment.
