Mayes signs letter with Brookhaven

Sweetwater’s Kris Mayes will be continuing his baseball career at the next level.
Mayes, a senior and three-year letterman, recently signed a letter of intent to play college baseball with Brookhaven College, an NCAA Division III school in Farmers Branch.
Mayes, who has been used as a pitcher and outfielder at Sweetwater, will be playing for a school that is nationally ranked and plays in the Metro Athletic Conference with Eastfield, Richland, North Lake, Cedar Valley and Mountain View.

These Sweetwater High School athletes will compete in the Region I-3A track meet at Texas Tech University’s Fuller Track in Lubbock on Monday and Tuesday. Japanese disaster brings business to Sweetwater company

Ludlum Measurements, Inc., a local manufacturer of radiation detection equipment, has experienced a significant increase in business due to the disaster in Japan, according to Mick Truitt, vice president of sales, marketing and business development.
Japan is still dealing with the results of the 8.9 magnitude earthquake and following tsunami. Not only are they working to clean up from that disaster, they also continue to deal with the resulting radiation leaks from the Fukushima nuclear plant, and that’s where Ludlum’s comes into the picture.

RPMH to implement hospitalist program

The Nolan County Hospital District Board of Directors met for its regular meeting on Monday evening, April 25, 2011 at the Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
Newly appointed board member Jose Villafranca was sworn in at the meeting. Administering the oath of office to Villafranca was Board Chairman Carlos Alvarado.
During the meeting, two topics generated a great deal of discussion, the Phase Two portion of the Energy Services Project/Building Improvement Project, which consists of the renovation of the Medical Surgical Unit, and the proposed Hospitalist Program.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 33 calls for service, issued 11 citations and made two arrests on April 27, 2011.

The SPD received 23, 911 calls.

Arrested by SPD:
• Logan Glass, 22 — Driving while license invalid with previous conviction.
• Julie Aguilar, 38 — Warrant.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 12 calls for service, served no civil papers and made two arrests on April 27, 2011.

Arrested by NCSO:
• Malaki Owusu Bender, 40 of Sweetwater — Warrant/parole violation and family violence assault causes bodily injury.

SW team to resume playoff run

April 29, 2011

The Sweetwater Stam-pede, an Arena League foot-ball team of fourth and fifth graders, defeated Abilene’s Jets 41-6 this past weekend and have a second-round playoff game at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Abilene Expo Center against the Abilene Chargers.
The winner plays either Abilene’s Cowboys or the Jim Ned Indians for the championship at 1:30 p.m.
The public is encouraged to come watch as the Stam-pede (8-0), which has given up just 48 points all season, goes for the title. The team is coached by Sammy Alva-rez Jr., Joe Hall, Randy Melendez, Roger Rudel and Matt Figueroa.
