Lady Mustangs Sending Eight To Regional Track Meet

The Lady Mustangs competed Wednesday in Snyder at their district track meet.
Sweetwater finished fourth with 80 points.
A very strong day from senior Jayci Shelton. Shelton, a surprise state qualifier in the 300 hurdles a year ago, took gold in the 100 and 300 hurdles Wednesday and helped the Lady Mustangs to a second-place finish in the mile relay.
“It wasn’t my best, but it was a very good time,” Shelton said of her 300 hurdles race. “It was one of the better times that I’ve ever run, so it was very good for me today. I felt very confident in it.

Kiwanis Club supports SISD students

The Kiwanis Club of Sweetwater opened the latest school board meeting with a check presentation.  Annually the club honors local talent with an opportunity to participate in Star Search and the proceeds benefit the A’s R Us program. The Kiwanis Club began and continually support both programs for the local students. Pictured are Kiwanis Club members Bill Haley and Billie Berry representing a check in the amount of $1,500 to SISD School Board President Jeanie McPherson.

Nolan County celebrates NPST Week

National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week is celebrated every year the second full week of April. It is to honor the men and women who work as dispatchers or 9-1-1 operators and the endless hours of service they provide to the residents of our county. This year's week of appreciation began April 11 and will continue until April 17.

Highland OAP goes to area contest

Highland High School's One-act play sf The Fastest Woman Alive advanced from District Competition on March 29.  The play by Karen Sunde is published by Dramatic Publishing and tells of the WASP (Women’s Air Corp Service Pilots) who were stationed in Sweetwater during WWll. The story highlights the accomplishments and heartaches of these brave women and of one of their primary leaders, Jackie Cochran.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 41 calls for service, issued one citation and made four arrests on April 12, 2011.

The SPD received 11, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Criminal mischief — 400 block of E. Ave. B.
• Forgery — 1600 block of Josephine.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had five calls for service, served one civil paper and made one arrest on April 12, 2011.

Arrested by NCSO:
• Kaitlin Veronika Diaz, 21, of Loraine, Taylor County warrant/bond forfeiture.

Lady Hornets Advance to Regional Track Meet

The Highland Lady Hornets recently competed at the area track meet in Trent with chances to advance to the regional meet.
Those that will be representing Highland in the regional track meet are, Callie Sandusky in the high jump and 1600 meter relay. Jessica McCain will be going as well in the high jump and the 800 meter relay.
Sierra Allen will be competing in the Pole Vault, and both the 800 and 1600 meter relays.
Beth Richburg will be competing in both the 100 and 300 meter hurdles and with 1600 meter relay team.

Mustangs Sending One to Regionals

Sweetwater competed Wednesday at the District track meet in Snyder.
Nick Nemir competed in both the 110 and 300 meter Hurdles, finishing 5th and 3rd respectfully. Nemir’s 3rd place finish will advance him to the Regional meet.
Coach Slaughter said the boys competed hard and all their times improved greatly.
110 Meter Hurdles – Nick Nemir 15.42 (5th).
300 Meter Hurdles – Nick Nemir 40.48 (3rd).
High Jump – Kyle McSherry 5’8” (7th).
4x100 Relay – Nick Nemir, Taylor Jones, Bobby Soto, Ryan Linebaugh 44.56 (4th).

No action on new lake leases

The standing room only crowd at the recent April 5 hearing regarding the new lake lease paled in comparison to the 20 who attending the City Commission meeting on Tuesday morning, April 12 at City Hall.
On the agenda, the commissioners were to consider and take action regarding the expired lake lot leases at Lake Sweetwater and Oak Creek Lake. After the 45-minute closed Executive Session meeting ended and the commissioners came back into regular session, citizens were informed of the decision that there would be "no action at this time."

Many attend Taste of Sweetwater

Over 430 people attended the annual Taste of Sweetwater on Monday, April 11, at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex, benefitting the Senior Nutrition Activities Program (SNAP). Many local restaurants featured their specialties for the public to enjoy. Many door prizes were also given during the event. Over $3,000 was raised at the event.
