The ‘Blues’ coming to JavaJax

JavaJax Live Music Venue announces an upcoming blues music performance by Blues Boy Willie. The event will be held on Saturday evening, July 16.

Family of police shooter speaks out

Snyder police officer, Corporal Darryl Campbell remained in critical condition Thursday after a near fatal gunshot wound to the head.
According to family and Snyder police however, Corporal Campbell continued to make improvements.
Those included slightly opening his eyes, moving both sides of his body, and apparently being weened off medication in hopes that he will fully wake-up.
During the recovery process at University Medical Center in Lubbock, there are officers with Corporal Campbell 24/7.
While he remains at the hospital, the support back home in Snyder has continued to grow.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 56 calls for service, issued seven citations and made two arrests on July 13, 2011.

The SPD received 20, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Criminal mischief — 1200 block of E. Broadway.
• Assault — 100 block of S. Hopkins Road.
• Theft — 300 block of Lamar.
• Theft — 1800 block of E. Avenue A.
• Theft — 100 block of S. Hopkins Road.
• Theft — 700 block of SW Georgia.

Arrested by SPD:
• Michael Woodward, 55 — Warrant.
• Manuel Adames III, 27 — Warrants.

Ray T. Reyes

Holy Mass of Christian Burial for Ray T. Reyes, 58, of Sweetwater, will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 18, 2011, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Father Michael Rodriguez officiating.
A Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 17, 2011, at McCoy Chapel of Memories, recited by Deacon Bill Butler.
Reyes died Thursday, July 14, 2011, at his home.

Clifford Wilson

Clifford Wilson, born Nov. 10, 1933, passed away in his home on June 21, 2011, a the age of 77. He will be missed by his many friends and certainly by his family. Known as “dad,” grandad, “coach” and Cliff, he lived a rich and full life. Born in San Saba the youngest of seven children he earned his high school diploma then went to Angelo College to play football. He met and married Suzie Jameson in 1953.

Senior League stars lose, 15-4

GARLAND - Sweetwater’s Senior League (ages 15-16) all-stars had more runs, hits and baserunners on Thursday than they did in their opening win the previous day at the Texas West Section 2 tournament.
Unfortunately, there was little clutch hitting, and not nearly enough outstanding pitching and defense this time around as Waco Southern handed Sweetwater its first loss, 15-4, at the South Garland Little League complex.

FW University blanks 10-11 year-olds

WACO - After scoring 14 runs against Wichita Falls in Wednesday’s opener, Sweetwater’s 10-11 year-old all-stars ran into a buzzsaw Thursday at the Texas West Section 2 Little League tournament as they fell to Fort Worth University, 10-0, in four innings.
Sweetwater, which failed to get a hit and had just one baserunner in the contest, must bounce back today in order to keep its sectional title hopes alive and stay in the tournament.

McCoy powers 10-11 year-olds past WF

WACO - Sweetwater’s 10-11 year-old all-stars used a 16-hit attack to crush Wichita Falls, 14-5, in Wednesday’s opening game of their Texas West Section 2 Little League tournament.
Sweetwater now faces Fort Worth University at 8:15 p.m. today and needs another win to move into the semifinals. If Sweetwater wins today, it will play Waco Midway at 8:15 p.m. Friday; if Sweetwater loses today, it will play The Colony at 6 p.m. Friday.

Senior League stars hold on for 3-2 victory

GARLAND - Sweetwater’s Senior League (ages 15-16) all-stars built a 3-0 lead against Dallas Wylie in Thursday’s opening game of the Texas West Section 2 Little League tournament, then held off a late rally for a 3-2 win at the South Garland field.
Sweetwater will now play Waco Southern in the semifinals at 8:30 p.m. today. The winner advances to Saturday’s championship game, while the loser plays an elimination game at 7:30 p.m. Friday and can still advance to Saturday’s title contest with a victory.

Campbell remains in critical condition

The Snyder police officer who was shot in the head Tuesday remains in critical condition this morning.
Corporal Darryl Campbell was injured during a shootout early Tuesday morning in Snyder.
Staff at University Medical Center in Lubbock say Campbell is responding to sound and able to squeeze staff members' hands when asked.
A trust fund is set up to benefit the family. Donations can be made through American State Bank in Snyder.
On Wednesday, police identified the shooter as Dwayne Birmingham of Snyder, who was shot and killed by another officer on the scene early Tuesday morning.
