Roscoe city election nears

One candidate in the race for Roscoe City Council Place 3 not only wants your vote on May 14, but wants you to know more about himself.
Virg Pruitt is one of five on the ballot for Place 3 within the Roscoe City Council. "I have lived in Roscoe my entire life," he said. "Graduated here, live here and I am raising a family here."
Pruitt currently serves as the Assistant Fire Chief for the Roscoe Volunteer Fire Department and has worked for the city of Roscoe in the past. Because of his former and current positions, Pruitt says that he is very familiar with the town and its citizens.

AFS parent meeting tonight

Thanks to community donations, the Aim for Success program will be presented to all SISD 6th – 12th grade students on Thursday, May 12, 2011 at Sweetwater High School.
On Wednesday, May 11, at 6 p.m., Aim for Success will be presenting their powerful program, “Teens, Sex and Choices”, at a parents-only meeting. The parent presentation will be held in the Sweetwater Middle School Gym at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
This program will preview what the students will see the next day and provide parents with helpful hints about how and when to communicate with your children about sexual activity.

Roscoe State Bank holds Relay For Life fundraiser

Roscoe State Bank had a bake sale and sold chances to win a gift basket filled with items donated by various merchants. Winner of the gift basket was Audelia Petrusek. Sweetwater Healthcare celebrates Cinco de Mayo

Residents, staff and guests enjoyed Cinco de Mayo festivities last week at Sweetwater Healthcare Center. Those attending enjoyed Mexican snacks, drinks, music and Mexican dancing by Aida Pantoja.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 33 calls for service, issued two citations and made two arrests on May 9, 2011.

The SPD received 15, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Theft — 100 block of S. Hopkins.
• Burglary of a vehicle — 1300 block of Grand.

Arrested by SPD:
• Justin Nash, 22 — Theft of a firearm.
• Ann Margaret Kirkland, 35 — Theft.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had eight calls for service, served no civil papers and made one arrest on May 9, 2011.

Arrested by NCSO:
• David Leslie Woolf, Jr., 28, of Abilene — Judgement.

Shelton ready to clear final hurdles as double qualifier

On Friday, Sweetwater’s Jayci Shelton has two chan-ces to end her high school career with a gold medal at the 3A state track meet. That’s twice as many as a year ago when Shelton made her first trip to Austin and had a fifth-place finish in her only event, the girls 300-meter hurdles.
A higher finish this year seems likely, because Shelton has yet to lose a race in the 300 hurdles, and her only runnerup finish was in the 100 hurdles two weeks ago at a regional qualifiers meet held in Lubbock where Shelton was just .03 seconds behind the winner.

Mercer begins state medalist bid Thursday at Kizer Course

Ryan Mercer of Sweetwa-ter will be competing in the Class 3A boys state golf tournament as a medalist starting at 9:55 a.m. Thursday at the Roy Kizer Golf Course in Austin. The 36-hole tourna-ment wraps up Friday.
Mercer is making his first trip to state after finish-ing as the No. 2 medalist earlier this month at the Region I-3A tournament in Lubbock. He had the lowest score of any regional medalist who was not on one of the top two teams.

Eleven involved in I-20 wreck

Eleven people were involved in a wreck on Interstate 20 east bound on Saturday around noon just West of the TA Travel Center truck stop. A white Yukon containing seven passengers and a Maxima containing four passengers collided when — according to passengers in the SUV — the Maxima came into their lane, causing the crash. Nine passengers were transported to nearby hospitals, one being flown to Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene. According to Sweetwater Emergency Services Manger Grant Madden, the SUV flipped one to two times and the Maxima rolled over.

Free blood sugar checks at SNCHD

Alice Velez from the Diabetic Outreach Program at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital will be at the health department on Thursday, May 19, from 8:30 a.m. until noon to check blood glucose (sugar) and answer any questions anyone may have regarding diabetes. Pamphlets and materials will be available.

May is Elder Abuse Prevention Month

Governor Rick Perry has proclaimed May as Elder Abuse Prevention Month. This month, Adult Protective Services' (APS) is reminding all Texans to do their part in the battle against abuse, neglect, and exploitation of the elderly and adults with disabilities.
“If you suspect that an elderly or disabled adult is being abused or neglected, please report it immediately,” said Beth Engelking, DFPS assistant commissioner for Adult Protective Services. “Protecting vulnerable adults is everyone’s business."
