Day three of the Albert Mendez, Jr. trial continued on Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011, in the 32nd Judicial District Court on the counts of sexual assault of a child, indecency of a child by contact and indecency of a child by exposure against Mendez following an incident with his step daughter on Jan. 17, 2010 at his residence in Sweetwater.
The day was full of testimonies â€” including Mendez taking the stand himself during the afternoon block of the trial.
The 2011 Sweetwater Heart Walk will take place on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011, at the Sweetwater Mustang track field. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. An informational breakfast was held this week with speakers telling about the local heart walk and heart disease. One speaker was Scott Lambert (right). His son, Zane (left) was born with a heart problem. At nine days old he had open heart surgery to fix a pinched aorta. Lambert stated that he was never limited by the operation and is currently a student at Sul Ross State University in Alpine.
Highland Heights United Methodist Church recently consecrated and delivered a collection of 55 used suitcases, toilet tissue, Kleenex, paper towels, paper cups, laundry detergent, dishwasher detergent, soap and toothbrushes to Gateway Family Services. Gateway ministers to individuals involved in family violence and sexual assault in a five county area, Scurry, Nolan, Mitchell, Fisher and Kent. A graveside service for Darlene Jones, 61, of Sweetwater, will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6, 2011, at Sweetwater Cemetery with Rev. Jimmy Don Bennett. Interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Jones died Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2011, in Abilene.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 59 calls for service, issued two citations and made two arrests on Aug. 3, 2011.
The SPD received 27, 911 calls.

Stanley Goff, of Mason, passed away on Monday, August 1, at the age of 61.Â Mr.
Five testimonies were heard during the second day of the criminal case against Albert Mendez, Jr. on Wednesday, August 3, 2011 in the 32nd Judicial District Court at the Nolan County Courthouse.
A competency hearing was held prior to the juryâ€™s entry to determine if the alleged victim was capable to take the stand for the case, which came about from an alleged incident which took place in the early morning hours on Jan. 17, 2010 at Mendezâ€™s residence at 702 W. New Mexico in Sweetwater. The victim was nine years old at the time.
Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) has named Lynn Staggs as its new pharmacy manager. Staggs, who joined the team in June, is responsible for continuing the hospitalâ€™s commitment of providing the best healthcare services in Nolan County.
Staggs, who was previously a pharmacy operations manager at a private company, is an accomplished pharmacist and executive leader who has an excellent history of caring for patients. He is now in charge of daily operations at the hospitalâ€™s in-house pharmacy.
Sweetwater Independent School District hosted this monthâ€™s Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce Coffee at the Sweetwater Mustang Bowl concession stand.
