Many attended the 2011 Nolan County Relay For Life event on Friday. Many local businesses sponsored the event and many held several fundraisers to help donate money to the American Cancer Society. The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 113 calls for service, issued two citations and made four arrests from June 3-5, 2011.
The SPD received 41, 911 calls.

Funeral services for Freddie Riggan, 76, of Troy, Texas and formerly of Sweetwater, will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 9, 2011, at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Rev. Elwyn Johnston officiating. Interment will follow at White Church Cemetery in Mulberry Canyon, Taylor County, under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at McCoy Funeral Home.
Riggan died Monday, June 6, 2011, in Temple.
Two of the five Sweetwater Little League teams in action Monday easily advanced after first-round victories at their single-elimination District 5 tournaments, each held at different Abilene locations.
The winners were the Major League Diamondbacks, who crushed the Breckenridge Giants 18-2; and the Minor League Reds, who cruised to a 14-1 victory over the Merkel Sluggers.
A total of 11 Sweetwater High School players have received all-District 5-3A baseball recognition for their play this past season.
Three players â senior pitcher Kris Mayes, sopho-more outfielder Ryan Linebaugh and freshman first baseman Greg Aiken â received first team all-district honors, while eight others are on the second team for Sweetwater: senior infielders Connor Stafford, Sterling Reeves and Cam-eron Fox, senior outfielder Tanner Crain, senior pitcher Larry Daniel, sophomore catcher Sean Morrow, sophomore outfielder Willie Norman and freshman pitcher Kaleb Hoover.
AUSTIN (AP) â Texas used six pitchers and smart base-running to beat Kent State 5-0 on Monday and win the NCAA Austin Regional.
The Longhorns (47-16) will host Arizona State in a three-game series in Austin beginning Friday.
Texas got its offense going in the bottom of the first when Tant Shepherd led off with a double and came around to score on a throwing error to give Texas a 1-0 lead.
Up 3-0 heading into the seventh, Texas shortstop Brandon Loy stole second base after singling through left field. Loy scored on the following play when Erich Weiss singled up the middle.

Funeral services for Mildred Cardwell Anderson, 89, of Sweetwater, will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 5, 2011, at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Doug Crum officiating. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, June 4, 2011, at McCoy Funeral Home.
Anderson died Friday, June 3, 2011, in Abilene.
Aubrey Phillip Childers was re-indicted last week by the Nolan County Grand Jury. Childers was charged with sexual assault, a second degree felony, enhanced to a first degree felony with one prior conviction. Court paper stated that Childers sexually assaulted the victim, knowing that the victim did not consent and was unconscious or physically unable to resist or unaware that the sexual assault was occurring.
Local cancer survivors walked the first lap, the âSurvivor Walkâ at the 2011 Nolan County Relay For Life. Family and friends followed after the first lap. Many activities took place at the event including live music by Bitter Creek and Static Pulse and a performance by Team Chip Tae Kwon Do. Fundraisers were also held at the event to add to the money raised for the cause.
