The Sweetwater seventh grade Red volleyball team won first place at a Lubbock Cooper tournament held on Saturday. The team picked up wins over Lubbock Cooper, Shallowater, Lubbock Christian and Levelland. Pictured on the back row from left are Brittany Peeples, Bergen Trevino, Lauren Jones, Kaitlyn Foster, Maddie Berry and Kensi Chowning. On September 20, Katherine Dickson and her family gave 4th graders from Roscoe, Highland and Blackwell the opportunity to participate in the Kids on the Land (KOL) program at the 69 Ranch near Maryneal, in which Ms. Dickson owns the land. Peggy Maddox, former SISD SEEK teacher and now Director of Kids of the Land program for Holistic Management International developed the program which provides a day of hands-on activities to help students reconnect to the land where they live.
AUSTIN - During their regular monthly meeting Thursday, the Texas Transportation Commission selected Phil Wilson as the Texas Department of Transportationâ€™s (TxDOT) 19th executive director, effective October 17, 2011. Wilson currently serves as senior vice president of public affairs for Luminant, an electric generation company headquartered in Dallas, and previously served as Texas Secretary of State.
Brysen Cantu, a student of Mrs. Hastey at Sweetwater Christian School, had top sales in the school's Cookie Dough Fundraiser. He and the other students sold cookie dough during the month of September in order to raise money for the school, which is a non-profit organization. Sweetwater Christian School is located at 507 Locust Street.
On Saturday, Oct. 1, at 6:50 p.m., three people were killed and one was injured in a two vehicle head on crash in Coleman County. Mario Gonzales Rios was driving a 2008 Hyundai four door East bound on U.S. HWY 67 near the community of Talpa in Coleman County. Lucio Mendoza was driving a 2004 GMC pickup West bound on the same highway. The East bound Hyundai, driven by Rios, crossed over into the West bound lane striking the GMC pickup head on.
Sula Faye Redden, 91, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011 at her daughterâ€™s home in Nolan County.
Funeral services will be held at at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011, at Broadway Baptist Church in Sweetwater with the Rev. Lyndel Hix and the Rev. Chris Stephens officiating. Interment will be in the Sweetwater Cemetery beside her loving husband of 64 years directed by McCoy Funeral Home of Sweetwater.
There will be a family visitation Monday, Oct. 3, at McCoy Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m.
Antonio B. Quintana, age 95, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 2, 2011 at his residence.
A rosary will be held at 7 p.m., Monday, Oct. 3, 2011 at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel recited by Carlos and Connie Rodriguez.
Holy Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Roscoe Cemetery.

MIDLAND â€” Midland Christian, like Sweetwater, plays 11-man football. However, running back Christian Whigham was a one-man wrecking crew for the host team Friday in a 48-21 win over Sweetwater.
Whigham finished with 214 yards on 19 carries and scored a school-record seven touchdowns, five of them in the first half, to help Midland Christian take a 48-0 lead before Sweet-water (3-3) came up with three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to make the final score a bit closer.
BROWNWOOD â€” The Sweetwater volleyball team came close to getting its first district win Friday, but instead lost to Brownwood in four games by scores of 24-26, 25-23, 22-25 and 15-25. Sweetwater fell to 0-2 in district and 16-16 overall, while Brownwood is 2-1 and 10-13 and just one-half game out of the district lead.
