Joseph Edward Mikac

April 18, 2011

Joseph Edward Mikac, age 67, of Birch Run, MI, died Thursday, April 14, 2011, at Regency Hospital Of Odessa. He was born in West, TX on April 24, 1943, to the late Henry John Mikac and Irene Vera (Churchman) Mikac. 
No services are scheduled at this time.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel of Odessa.

Holy Mass of Christian Burial for Joe A. Ramirez, 52, of Colorado City will be held on Wednesday, April 20, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Officiating will be Father Michael Rodriguez. Interment is at Sweetwater Cemetery, under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home of Sweetwater. Rosary will be on Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at 4 p.m. at McCoy Chapel of Memories. The rosary will be recited by Pauline Gauna and Connie Palacios.
Mr. Ramirez died Sunday, April 17, 2011, in Sweetwater.

Shirley Irene Smith

A graveside service for Shirley Irene Smith, 64, of Sweetwater, will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 21, 2011, at Cedar Gap Cemetery in Abilene with Rev. Lewis Smith officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Smith died Sunday, April 17, 2011, in Sweetwater.
She was born Dec. 13, 1946, in Abilene. She married Robert Smith on March 25, 1995, in Sweetwater. Shirley had lived in Sweetwater for the past 10 years and in Abilene before. She was a cook by trade and was a member of the New Life Tabernacle Church in Sweetwater.

SHS boys are regional alternates

April 18, 2011

The Sweetwater High School boys golf team finished as regional alternates after a third-place showing at the district tournament. From left are Guy Bond, Alex Castillo, Mason Andrews, Dylan Torres and Ryan Mercer. Mercer qualified as a medalist and will play in Region I-3A tournament, which is Wednesday and Thursday at Lubbock’s Meadowbrook Golf Course. This will be the third straight regional trip for Mercer, who is a junior. Meanwhile, the SHS girls golf team is playing in the regional tournament today and Tuesday at Lubbock.

Nolan County hosts small acreage landowner workshop

SWEETWATER – The Texas AgriLife Extension Service office in Nolan County will conduct a four-part series of small-acreage landowner workshops. The first was held from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, April 11 in the Extension Meeting Room on the third floor of the Nolan County Courthouse in Sweetwater.
Other sessions are scheduled for April 26, May 10 and May 24, said Zachary Wilcox, AgriLife Extension agent in Nolan County.
“These workshops will each have different subject-matter material, but all are geared to the person with a few acres seeking information on what to do with it,” Wilcox said.

Juanita Marie Dickerson

Funeral services for Juanita Marie Dickerson, 82, of Sweetwater, will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 18, 2011, at Avondale Baptist Church with Rev. Jason Shuttlesworth officiating. Interment will follow at Newman Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, April 17, 2011, at McCoy Funeral Home.
Dickerson died Thursday, April 14, 2011, in Abilene.

Local pastor returns from mission trip

The three day mission trip "for the glory of God" led Sweetwater resident and Word of God pastor Dale Stowe — along with missionary Larry Goff — through a "glorious trip" that began on April 1, 2011.
Stowe and Goff went into three areas, including the Mexican cities of Nuevo Laredo and Reynosa, where a majority of the work was done.

Quilting for a cause

Recently some of the members and friends of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints tied three quilts to send to those in need in Japan. Some of those who participated were Shirley Church, John and Nancy Verschoor, Toby Milani, Christian and Sue Ulbrich, Willie Mae Green, Margaret Bishop and the two missionaries, Elder Durfey and Elder Jacobsen. The quilts will be sent to Salt Lake and then forwarded with other humanitarian supplies from the Church headquarters to Japan.

Trinity Baptist breaks ground on renovations

“To God Be the Glory” was the phrase most uttered at Trinity Baptist Church this past Sunday, April 10, 2011. It was following morning worship this day that the Trinity Church Family broke ground for a much-anticipated Family Life Center.  The community is invited to watch the blessings in progress as you travel down Hailey Street in your daily commute. The first signs of construction should be evident soon.
