Sweetwater Independent School District schools went back to school on Thursday morning, Jan. 5, 2012, after the Christmas holiday break. Shown are Sweetwater Intermediate School fourth graders in Mrs. Sabra Hazardâ€™s class, easing back into their school lessons.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 37 calls for service, issued no citations and made four arrests on Jan. 3, 2012.
The SPD received 20, 911 calls.

Linda Hinajosa Hughes, 82, of Sweetwater passed away on Dec. 21, 2011. She married Silas Wayne Hughes on Nov. 20, 1950 in Carlsbad, New Mexico. Linda was born to Luis Hinajosa and Victoria Arrendondo, Nov. 17, 1929 in Hebbronville, TX.
She is survived by a sister, Maria Veloz from California; a daughter, Mary Hughes from Rowlett, Texas; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012, at the North Dallas Funeral Home at 2710 Valley View Lane, Dallas.
The Sweetwater Elks Lodge will have its annual free throw Hoop Shoot contest this Saturday, Jan. 7. This yearâ€™s event will be held at the Sweetwater Intermediate School gym.
The contest is open to all boys and girls between the ages of 8-13. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and shooting starts at 9:30 a.m.
Contestant age groups will be determined by a par-ticipantâ€™s age as of April 1, 2012. For instance, if a contestant is 7 years old on April 1 they are too young to participate, while if the contestant is 14 years old on April 1 they are too old.
Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital welcomed the 2012 New Year Baby on Sunday, January 1 at 10:32 a.m.
Joshua Krivanek weighed eight pounds and was 20 inches long. He is the son of Belinda and Uwe Krivanek.
Sweetwater Animal Control currently has a family of pets available for adoption.
The pets available for adoption this week are a black Labrador mix mother and her five male puppies, three black, one brown and the runt, a beige puppy. Also still available is the male husky mix puppy, about one year old from last week.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
The pets are required to have their vaccination before they leave to their new homes.
Larry Cornoyer is the Artist of the Month for January. Larry, who was born in Sweetwater, lives in Roscoe and his been sketching nearly his whole life, but didn't start in earnest until he was 30. He is self taught and works primarily with pencil, but also uses charcoal, pen, pastels and colored pencils. His works will be displayed at the County-City Library throughout the month.

After compiling just a 5-11 record prior to the holiday break, the Sweetwater boys basketball team is starting to pile up some victories.
The Mustangs began 2012 with a dominating 64-39 win at home over Roby on Tuesday, their fourth win the past five games.
The most dominating stretch came near the start of the contest. Sweetwater outscored the Lions 19-3 in the final five minutes of the first quarter to open a 23-7 advantage, and held leads of between 12 and 28 points the rest of the way.
