The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce hosted a 50th anniversary celebration on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012, at the Sweetwater Country Club for Ludlum Measurements. Many members of the community attended the reception and several presentations were made to founder Don Ludlum.
During their meeting on Monday morning, Feb. 13, the Nolan County Commissioners approved two contracts with Wigington, Hooker and Jeffrey Architects toward repairs and reconstruction of the Nolan County Courthouse and construction of a jail and possible offices for the county sheriff.
The contracts include--for both projects--the estimated budgets, services and responsibilities of the parties. A timeline of both projects was presented, which consisted of evaluating proposed constructions.
The regular monthly meeting of the City Commission was scheduled for Tuesday morning, Feb. 14, 2012 at City Hall. However, travel and unforeseen circumstances led to the lack of a quorum, resulting in the postponement of the meeting.
Nonetheless, a few non-deliberating items were briefly presented. Commissioner Jerod Peek read a resolution which recognized the economic contributions of the Ludlum family to Sweetwater as the company bearing the family's name is celebrating 50 years of business this year.
Sweetwater Animal Control currently has three dogs available for adoption.
One of the adoptable pets is a female basset hound mix shown on Tuesday. Also available are a female mixed breed puppy, a male mixed breed dog (brown) and a male terrier mix (white).
According to Sweetwaterâ€™s animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 50 calls for service, issued five citations and made six arrests on Feb. 14, 2012.
The SPD received 89, 911 calls.

Funeral services for Elijio Martinez Hernandez, 70, of Sweetwater, will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012, at noon at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Father Okonkwa officiating. Interment will follow at Loraine Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
A Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 19, by Angie Limones at McCoy Chapel of Memories.
Hernandez died Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012, at University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas.

After competing at a meet in Clyde this past Thursday, Sweetwater High Schoolâ€™s powerlifting teams will host their own event â€” the annual Arlon Barnes Classic â€” Saturday starting at 9 a.m. at the SHS gym.
Over 300 lifters represen-ting about 20 schools are expected for the meet, the last for Sweetwater before regional competition. The girlsâ€™ regional meet will be March 3 at Monahans and the boysâ€™ regional meet is March 9 at Sundown. The top regional qualifiers will advance to state competition at Corpus Christi and Abilene, respectively.
Sweetwaterâ€™s freshman boys basketball team fin-ished 14-6 overall and 5-3 in district on Tuesday after an easy 44-22 win over Snyder. Duanta Wil-liams scored 18 points and Rhett Torres 15, while Martes Harris had five, J.P. Poe three, Nick Haley two and Bray Amos one. Sweetwater led 15-5, 25-14 and 32-16 at the quarter breaks.
