Roscoe begins track at Rotan

Roscoe’s varsity teams and JV boys traveled to Rotan to begin their track season this past Saturday.
The Roscoe girls and boys placed fourth at their meets as they scored 73 and 59 points, respectively, while the Roscoe JV boys team edged Haskell’s JV 129-128 to win its division.
Those placing in the top six are listed.

SHS regional boys powerlifters

These members of the Sweetwater High School boys powerlifting team have qualified for the regional powerlifting meet to be held Friday at Sundown High School. Lady Stangs travel to Post after 9-7 loss

The Sweetwater softball team saw its record fall to 6-5 heading into a weekend tournament at Post after losing a 9-7 decision at Colorado City Tuesday.
Sweetwater had over twice as many hits (15) as Colorado City, but never led in the contest due in part to baserunning and fielding errors as well as pitching wildness, said coach Steve Roberts.
Kelsi Crosson led the offense by going 4-for-4 with a double while Alicia Finn had three hits and Suede Shirley (triple), Angela Garza and Kendra Crosson had two each.

Rabies Warning: Vaccinate Your Pets, Do Not Handle Wildlife

A rabid cat has been identified at Lake Sweetwater. Rabies is a fatal viral disease. Protect yourself, your children, and your pets against rabies. Be wary of wild animals. Rabies is in our wildlife, and it can cross over to domestic animals. This is the breeding season for skunks. Bats and skunks are the most common carriers of rabies. Do not feed, handle, or approach wild animals. Children should be told to stay away from unknown or wild animals--including dogs, cats, and kittens.

--Contact your veterinarian about vaccinating your pets.
--Never handle wild animals.

RPRHC raises awareness for MD

Rolling Plains Rural Heath Clinic raised awareness by supporting the fight for the cure of Muscular Dystrophy (MD) during the month of February. February was Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Month. Clinic employees wore green ribbon t-shirts every Friday throughout the month to support MD. On Feb. 18, the clinic held an "Empty Your Pockets Day" in each department. The department with the most money collected for Muscular Dystrophy won a break party hosted by Nancy Nicholson with Encompass Home Health. The total raised by all departments was $686.14. On Feb.

Round-Up events set

Rattlesnake Round-Up week is finally here.
From Thursday, March 10 through Sunday, March 13, the Sweetwater Jaycees host their 53rd annual event at the Nolan County Coliseum. As usual, several activities are being held in conjunction with the Round-Up.
The Round-Up itself will actually be Friday through Sunday, March 11-13, at the coliseum. Gates will open at 8 a.m. all three days, closing at 5 p.m. on Friday and Sunday and at 6 p.m. on Saturday. The cost is $7 for adults and $4 for students.

Round-Up weekend 5K run to benefit AHA

The American Heart Association Rattlesnake 5K Run will be held on Saturday, March 12, 2011, with the start location at the west side of Sweetwater High School on Crane Street by the bus barn. Registration begins at 8 a.m. with the race to start at 9 a.m. Entry fee is $25, which includes runners T-shirt and runners pack.
Those wanting to participate may register online at www.timingspecialist.com or may register at the starting line. Medals will be awarded to the top three places in both male and female divisions.

Hoops, Dreams and Goals tips off March 25

BIG SPRING – All the makings of a top-notch basketball tournament are in place for the Seventh Annual Hoops Dreams and Goals 2011 competition scheduled for March 25, at the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum.
Teams from Big Spring to Pecos to Ballinger to Snyder will compete in a day of basketball tournament action beginning at 9 a.m. with the grand entrance, followed by a rousing welcome from West Texas Centers CEO Shelley Smith, LMSW.

Help fix Freddie the Fire Truck

East Ridge Elementary School is currently holding their annual penny drive. This year's proceeds will help fix the Sweetwater Fire Department's Freddie the Fire Truck. "Freddie broke last year and hasn't been safe to use since. It is a significant amount of funding that is needed to fix him or possibly replace him," said Crystal Rea, Second Vice President of East Ridge PTO. "We thought this would be a great fundraiser this year since Freddie is such a great asset to the community in teaching children fire safety."

James E. Harrell

James E. Harrell, age 55, of Sweetwater, passed away on Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at Hendrick Medical Center. 
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 10, 2011, at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Chris Stephens officiating. Burial will follow at Belvieu Cemetery in Rotan, Texas. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home. 
James was born April 7, 1955 to John H. and Winnie Lou (Harris) Harrell. He worked as a machine operator at U.S. Gypsum for many years. He was a Baptist.
