Mayes leads SW’s win

March 9, 2011

Once again, Sweetwater’s Kris Mayes was his dominating self on the mound Tuesday against Midland Greenwood. And just for good measure, the Mustang pitcher brought a big bat to Newman Park as he led his team to a 3-0 victory.
Mayes (1-2) — who tossed an eight-inning one-hitter and struck out 16 in his most recent outing three days earlier at Sweetwater’s annual Wood Bat Classic, but took a hard-luck loss due to a couple of late errors — got the victory this time, though he was in a scoreless pitching duel for the first four innings. However, Mayes changed that with one swing of the bat.

Mustangs to continue homestand today after four wins at Classic

March 8, 2011

It’s not even mid-March, and Sweetwater’s baseball team has already equalled its win total for the entire 2010 season. The Mustangs can exceed it by defeating Midland Greenwood today at Newman Park starting at 6 p.m.
The Mustangs are off to an 8-2-1 start after going 8-21 a year ago, and five of this season’s victories — including four this past weekend at Sweetwater’s annual Wood Bat Classic — have come in the friendly confines of Newman Park.
Sweetwater finished 4-1-1 at its three-day event that ended Saturday.

Lady Stangs beaten at LV, play at C-City

March 8, 2011

After an 11-1 loss at San Angelo Lake View on Saturday, the Sweetwater High School softball team will try to rebound today when it goes to Colorado City for a 6:30 p.m. contest.
A nine-run, second-inning uprising by Lake View turned Saturday’s game into a blowout as Sweetwater fell to 6-4. The Lady Mustangs managed to avoid a shutout by scoring in the fifth inning, but still lost by the 10-run rule. Kinsey Browning, Jackie Carey and Suede Shirley had hits and Taylor McKoy, Alicia Finn and Maty Montgomery pitched. Sweetwater committed four errors.
